Young guy in my local bs thought a chainset was a crankset + a chain + cassette but to be fair he only worked there on a saturday

I bet it`s the same "bike shop" that didn`t recognise brake pads for a road bike. I`ll just watch first and see if anybody says the word.......

I'm guessing Halfords but don't really see any need for secrecy. It's hardly as if anyone was ripped off, cheated or treated badly in any way.
So was I! Just wanted to see if anybody else said the same. I would use the phrase "bike shop" very loosely in that they sell (sort of) bikes. As for service.....xx(:banghead:

I commuted on the pub bike today, because the parts supplier to one LBS can't tell the difference between an 8-speed cassette and a 9-speed cassette.

If you google Chainset you get the same results as crankset.:okay:

I don't see the issue? You ask for something, staff doesn't understand.

Yet the staff then spend their time trying to find out for you (and hopefully learn themselves in time), and get others to help. Instead of taking the pee out of them, how about acknowledge they actually did spend time to try and help and find out, when they could have shrugged their shoulders and said "dunno mate".

Hopefully, those guys you spoke to, will now know that terminology. Everybody keeps learning, even simple stuff that you know, may be new to others.

Well then that's probably a bit unfair. They will cover a huge range of things for sell, only partly bikes. They then have bikes for sell and probably know how to do that. Components will require a large amount of product knowledge which is most likely not cost effective to train various staff in knowing. They will have technicians who probably do know but they wouldn't be on the shop floor.

If I go to John Lewis to buy a washing machine I wouldn't expect the staff to know the name of component parts if I wanted to order one.
I would if they sold the component parts.
