If you like old films and random (and long forgotten) 60's and 70's TV series, try Talking Pictures a new channel showing a very eclectic mix of old mainly British films and other stuff I've never heard of. http://talkingpicturestv.co.uk

It's on Sky channel 343 and Freeview 81. It's on Virgin and Freesat too

I thought episode one of the Night Manager was very good but the second one was pretty dreadful. It really didn't need a whole hour for the bloke to go through an elaborate charade in order to get inside the bad guy's lair. The storytelling could have been a lot more efficient. Also, most of the characters are a bit over the top. Give me the understated cast of TTSS anyday.

Thanks! She's helping me watch MOTD just now. Her assessment of Arsenal is as follows:

"Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggghhhhhh"

It's going to be a long night.

Just caught up with The Renaissance Unchained on the ol' PVR last night. Wonderful stuff. Just gorgeous to look at, full of interesting info & ideas that I for one didn't know, and I do find Waldemar Januszczak a very engaging presenter - a bloke who clearly really knows his stuff, and can communicate his enthusiasm and knowledge in a down to earth way, with no trace of head-up-own-bum syndrome.

I'm really enjoying The NIght Manager, except perhaps for Olivia Coleman. She's a great comic actor, but for serious stuff she always seems to adopt a facial expression where the corners of her mouth are sternly drawn down and she looks as if she's just realised someone's farted nearby..
I'm not sure that's adopting a facial expression - that's just what she looks like! I think she's great, and can convey emotion economically like very few thesps.

She's one of those faces that had me wondering "Where do i know her from?" ...so much so I couldn't concentrate on Happy Valley. Had to stop it whilst i checked... it was the excellent Intermission (2003).

Just finished watching Mr Robot, which I enjoyed. A series in which the tech seemed reasonably plausible - no hitting three keys to do to an image what it'd take half an hour to do in Photoshop, or comically large Command Prompt fonts.

I've also been watching a couple of BBC maths documentaries with Marcus duSautoy.

I watched half of the third episode of The Night Manager but couldn't last the course. Is anything actually going to happen? I don't think I'm cut out for the life of a dodgy arms dealer, spending my life listlessly waffling away beside swimming pools in tacky Cinzano advert locations. And what about all those beautiful but miserable women who seen to have escaped en masse from a particularly dismal Ingmar Bergman suicide-fest? It's no way to spend your life.

I like The Night Manager, it's subtle and intriguing. I expect people who like the Bond films are finding the lack of loud explosions and high-speed chases a bit difficult to come to terms with, but I'm happy not to be bored by predictable stuff like that .
Personally, I don't want explosions or car chases....just something interesting to happen....anything really other than the hero looking decorative, wistful and mysterious, and on Valium..
