What trainers do you wear with normal pedals?

I have never used clip on pedals nor toe clips as I don't like the idea of my feet being 'trapped'. I generally wear trainers but the ones I've got are quite bulky and more suited to winter wear. I do a lot of miles and will be touring, too, so something light but firm underfoot would suit. Any suggestions?

I wear some plimsollish hitec shoes for short distances and trainers with hard stiff soles for longer ones. If it's raining buckets, army boots for short distances, hope to dry the trainers after longer ones by stuffing them with newspaper!

I've used muddy fox tour 100 MTB shoes without fitting cleats but the blanking plates let in water and rust the screws eventually, then the plates fall off

Any shoe really. I do ride in a pair of these for the commute (they often come up in sales) or a longer ride. A stiffer sole is handy for comfort on the bike so ever a cheap walking shoe will often do.

I've been riding the Trike in Converse 'bumper' boots but that may be a bit 'Hipster'. :becool:
In my defence for wearing them I've owned at least a couple of pairs for the last 45 years (not the same couple of pairs, they do drop to bits eventually) and I'm not stopping wearing them just cos they're 'in fashion' now.

I have been using Karrimor walking shoes and a pair of their closed toe sandals , Both seem to grip the pedals well and are very comfortable.

Bump!

Since I got my bike, I've been wearing a pair of Nike trainers. (White, flat sole and lace up.) I'm now looking for a different pair though as my nikes absorb water like a sponge, leaving my socks and feet sodden - not good. They've also began to stink - the cleaning lady was complaining about the smell in the boys changing room

I don't want to change to clipless pedals just yet but want 'cycling shoes'.

Suggestions welcome.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I just wear rockports. Until about 3 months ago, I always used flat pedals. Didn't want or like clipless. Now I have toe clips which are great and still use rockports.

I've got a pair of merrel walking shoes that are exceptionally comfy for walking www.merrell.com/UK/en_GB/moab-ventilator/16219M.html

Give a good platform while being well ventilated when riding. I often get loss of feeling in my toes after around 40mins though, but I seem to get that whatever, thinking of trying some proper cycling footwear to see if it helps.

More regularly just wear my work shoes for the short commute though
