I find trail shoes work the best - the ones I wear for hockey.

Adidas Kanadia - always a great shoe for walking, trails and grip on pedals as the studs on the bottom provide solid grip.

Basically I just recycle walking shoes that have had it cos the sole is worn flat. They get moved onto bike use, where the flat sole is a plus and it doesn't matter if they get trashed by the DMR pins.

I have never used clip on pedals nor toe clips as I don't like the idea of my feet being 'trapped'. I generally wear trainers but the ones I've got are quite bulky and more suited to winter wear. I do a lot of miles and will be touring, too, so something light but firm underfoot would suit. Any suggestions?

Asics Enduro Gel trainer trail running trainers.

I use them on SPD pedals as well for rides of up to 64 miles and possibly further.

and mostly keen newports, nice bit of ventilation:okay:

after years of spd and spdsl, trainers are great. hop off the bike, walk around places. go into places without looking and sounding like a twit. You dont need magic shoes to ride a bike. I rode hundreds of miles last week in trainers and sandals, the carbon soled shoes have been in a cupboard for months!
