The weather here in south east Ireland has been rubbish here for last few weeks. we have had everything from heavy wind , rain with loads of flooded roads........... and here this morning frost !

I have only been able to get out on bike once since 15th December  I always leave 5.30 - 5.45 am as its what suits family life here. I would be back by 8am which is good, to have it done and have no excuses or issues later in the day that would force a cancel. The only weather that would prevent me going is anything that I think may cause an injury through falling or getting blown under a truck/car. the road I take would be a secondary route so it approx 12 - 14 ft wide, so getting close to traffic is possible:evil:

Routine works best for me, I get prepared the night before both bike and gear as time is precious in the morning time especially with 3 kids going to school. Im of for the dreaded walk some time this morning...... maybe ill push my bike along with me ?:bicycle:

A lot of people say to buy studded tyres but I just can't justify the costs...I like to get out early when possible too. At this time of year though I just wait until the frost clears as much as possible then go out and apologise profusely to the wife (she still moans though!)

we are all in the same boat regarding an injury, a broken arm or collar bone I can do without. I am heading out for a walk there now...... lovely sunshine is out now...... but its to turn stormy this evening again. Its been 5 months since ive done more than 60 km so its like I will be back starting at 10 or 15 km again to build up stamina. I was cycling 3 times weekly 45km each time but that is cut short now with these dangerous roads :cursing:

I find that going out late at night and using main roads is a good way of maintaining regular exercise during the winter months - late at night the traffic flow is considerably less and using main roads means they tend to not be as badly affected by ice as they get gritted. It's sometimes a pain to be heading out at 10pm when everyone else is heading to bed tho! But means slightly longer lie in the morning, rather than getting up at 5am for an early morning spin.

Well, as cold weather is often said to arrive across the Atlantic, and Sunday afternoons Packers game rumoured at -28C or less my Winters might just be going on soon.

Good idea!

You need a turbo trainer or rollers, not the most enjoyable way to cycle but it keeps them legs moving, i am sitting here contemplating do i get on the rollers or give it another half an hour, as it does look like the rain is slowing down, but it still sounds a bit gusty out there.

I had a turbo for a while probably used it a dozen times. I did not really like using it and was a bit loud as I was using it in the hallway. I was able to do about 45 mins max as the boredom used to kill me, was not really suitable when you have small kids in the house anyways. Its much better to sneak out of the house and get out in the fresh air and open road :bicycle:

Im just back from 7 km walk .........and I am so glad I was not out cycling this morning, the road is lethal with ice only 300 m down the road from me, right where I would have went in the dark this morning

I use the turbo trainer, it stops me going crazy.
Keep the sessions down to 30 mins at most.
10 min warm up, 10 mins high intensity and 10 mins warm down.
Prefer riding out, but not a fan of wet windy weather
