when fitted the new one is flush with the shell like this

So you hadn't actually tried to fit the cups into the shell, despite proclaiming that they were too small..?

Here is the old cup and the new cup side by side. not 100% clear from the pic but threads are identical just the outer rim is different. anyone any idea why?

correct. I took one look at the outer size and assumed they were wrong. I cannot for the life of me see why they have reduced the outer size, other than to save a couple of grams

the mistake I made was not at least trying them for size. They looked wrong so I assumed they were.

Maybe time to review your sig..?

I thought they didn't! Just being a plonker. It is a couple of months since I tried, and having stripped it down then, I didn't bother to try fitting it since it looked so wrong, and the tool wouldn't fit ( and I hadn't spotted the adapter for the tool!). I enjoy having a go, and have learnt something new. And have reduced the bike weight by 14g!
