Why wait to save up and buy a new bike when you can get a decent second-hand bike either from your local bike shop or from eBay. Several on eBay at the moment for under two hundred pound. Keep watching and you may even get one cheaper than that, that way you’ve money to spare for clothes and lights and all the other things you need.

15-20 mph (im quite a fast runner so that may feedback into how fast i will ride) im gonna be chaving so much

I cycle 12 miles to work and back 4 days a week, averaging anywhere between 16-20mph. On a heavy hybrid. On a quiet cycle track/road combo. Laden with bags, lights, etc. I also cycle in sports shorts (non cycling specific) sports t-shirt (non cycling specific) and a cycling specific high vis jacket, gloves and leg warmers. That is my winter set up and does me well. You dont need full lycra to ride quickly. I chaffed for the first month or two. Now I dont.

Get the bike, get some lights. Get a couple of spare tubes, pump and tyre levers. That will do you for now and then you can add kit as and when you need it. And I agree with what has been said before reference London riding. You will do well to average those sorts of speeds in heavy London traffic. Or suicidal if you do ^_^

If u look at the specs of the btwin triban 3 it hard to find a bike that is 2nd hand that is under 300 that is good condition or/and better spec

im planning to use it for commuting and its not gonna be short distances 6 mile each way and if im averaging 15-20 mph (im quite a fast runner so that may feedback into how fast i will ride) im gonna be chaving so much plus if im wearing normal clothes that will slow me down a few mph too
i think you should g0 and buy the bike now i have one too but i bought all the stuff after you can always get more stuff when you want christmas is coming so you can ask your mum for things but lights would be good and some reflective things too i don't think you gonna average 20 mph in london cos of all the traffic but if you are fit like you say i don't think lycra goona make too much difference except for to stop chavving and you would hav to carry a change of clothing you could save up for some apostrophes and capital letters too full stops cheap on ebay at the moment what are you studying at college;)no offense intended but i have to read your posts loadz of times to work it all out

As others have said portableaj, buy the bike and what you save on commuting costs will soon mount up and you can buy more/ upgrade kit. If you are going to be commuting after dark buy a cheap set of lights to start, you can upgrade in good time; next maybe buy a pump and tyre levers. Normal clothes won't chave for that distance either and for the few minutes special clothes save, you spend more time changing out of it. If you still are tempted for lycra, etc buy it down the line also. ;)

I think he's decided to buy the whole lot at once?

Part of the fun for me is buying and saving for bits and pieces over time, but that's just me. I don't have to rely on my cycling to get me to and from work. (Would that I could!) I suppose if you have to get straight into London commuting then lights, pump, tube, helmet and multi-tool are not going to be adequate.
