What is the best replacement for BB square taper 118mm?

I thought frame type would affect it. So here is more details (I might not need a new bottom bracket)..

I bought a new frame that came with a bottom bracket. I've transferred the whole groupset to the new frame but the BB. When I tried the crankset, the smallest ring touched the chain stay.

The manufacture states that a 118mm bottom bracket should be used with the crank I've got. However, the same crank has been used with a bb that seems to be shorter than 118 (If I am measuring it right) but longer than the one in the new frame. I have not removed them yet.

Would it be OK to use the crankset with bb that was used with the old frame since it worked fine before? Would the old BB work with the new frame (without smallest ring touching chain stay)?

If the old BB worked with this chainset then I'd expect it to work just as well in the new frame if all the existing parts have been transferred. When the manufacturers specify a BB length the expectation is that it will work the same whatever frame it is fitted to.

There are likely to be differences, but small enough not to be an issue.

At this stage the best advice I can offer is to try it and see if it works. If not, the worst case is that you have to buy a new 118mm bottom bracket.
