It's partly due to privatisation. Late running trains are fined & dependant on what other delays a late running train causes, the costs can be thousands of pounds. The company i work for recently issued an instruction to conductors that doors must be closed 30 secs before departure time & not re-opened for any late coming passengers (unless it's the last service of the day)

Well, I suppose it was run as a unified service then, rather than competing businesses.

Trains are still the best way to travel though!
