The Peatys sealant in the gravelbike rear was great at high pressure but not exactly good at low pressure and I run low pressures šŸ‘Ž So I emptied it out and cleaned the tyres and wheel before putting a 60ml bottle of Orange seal in. I lost a wee bit on seating so I stuck another 60ml in.

šŸ¤ž A good sign is that the spilled Peaty's was still watery, even though it was spilled first, compared to the spilled Orange seal which had already started to go latexy (made up word šŸ™ƒ).

After that was all done I cleaned the bike and relubed it.

Take a look at DiscoBrakes. One pair is about the same price, but 4 pairs only cost about double so they end up half price per pair. They are currently doing 20% off this month with the code JANUARYSALE so each pair would only be around Ā£3. I bulk buy and keep spares for the future.

"Shimano Compatible Replacement Blue Rubber Shoe Inserts 4 Pairs - Replacement Rubber Pads"
Blue Pads, are these the ones you are suggesting ? if so I will order some

I need to start replacing them when the tread (the nobbly bits on the pads) wear off, seem to make less grinding noise when they are newish, work better too
at Ā£3 a go I might bring myself to do that (take a bit of will power)

They list which brakes they are compatible with.

I have Campagnolo brakes on my bikes so I buy different ones.

Finished the re-build. Fitted rear brake cable, brake blocks front and rear and set brakes up. Final adjustments to bars and mudguards. Added new (Ergotech) seat pin and (Spa Nidd) saddle. Fitted bottle cage, rear mudguard flap and saddlebag support.

Most of the kit was from the cellar or part of the original build. The cranks and front mech were unused and given by a friend. Only purchased parts were the Ergotech City Cruiser bars, Ergotech seat post and bottom bracket cartridge from SJS Cycles and the saddle from Spa.

Not really 'fettling', just sorting out a flat tyre on this afternoon's ride. It was getting very chilly half an hour before sunset so I got going again and headed for home. I really didn't fancy potentially having to fix another flat in the dark, with frozen fingers!

I had found a tiny piece of glass in the tyre, which I thought was the culprit (and extracted with the toothpick that I carry for that job) , but a post-mortem on the tube just now showed that the leak is on a seam in the tube. I usually repair tubes 3 or 4 times before scrapping them but that tube already had 2 other repairs on the same seam which made me suspect a manufacturing defect. Best to scrap it, so I cut it in half with scissors before I changed my mind!

I must think of a use for old tubes. I don't really like throwing that kind of thing in a bin, destined for landfill.

The boss found a set of ā€œnon-currentā€ Bontrager aero roadbike levers in the back during inventory. I figured my old Bottecchia could use some cool aero carbon bits so I picked them up. Pretty much every piece of the mounting hardware had to be modified to fit in the roadster bars the poor old lump is now fitted with, and those needed drilling for the cables but it did turn out pretty cool looking.

Stupid levers are worth more than the bike.

Parts delivered yesterday from Spa Cycles & fitted today - the 80mm stem has gone onto my Elan Ti to replace the 100mm one fitted as standard, the FSA Wing Compact bars & tape have gone onto the Elan 725 to replace the thin feeling Deda ones supplied with the bike.

Hopefully that will be the end of the fettling (other than routing cleaning & lubrication) for a while, with the possible exception of lowering the stem on the Elan 725 by 10mm (one spacer) to 30mm tomorrow.

The other day I ended up fording a flood which turned out to be nearly bottom bracket height, so today I removed the chainset and BB to check on the bearings. Whenever I dismantle a Campag ultra-torque assembly, Iā€™m reminded what a nicely engineered and elegant system it is, with its hirth joint in the middle of the axle. Some pictures here, for the curious.

The sealed bearings turned out to be fine, which is good because I donā€™t actually have the appropriate tool to remove them from the axles, so I would have had to ā€œcome up with somethingā€. Also I donā€™t have any replacement bearings to hand. So I cleaned it all up, regreased, and re-installed. Now to deal with a pair of stinky old shoes which took too long to dry after the dip and now smell alarmingly of catā€™s peeā€¦

Nice bike and looks very well looked after. I refurbished a Galaxy at work today and it certainly wasnā€™t as good as that.

It's not bad. I never rode it back from Hereford yesterday though, because in the first few hundred yards it became apparent that the gears jump badly, probably due to wear on the cassette. Plus it was very cold and windy. So I feebled out and got my wife to collect me instead.šŸ˜³

took the squealing pads out of the commuter and sanded them down as they had a nasty film of gunk on them , after i fixed that i started to jet wash the crud off the frame and the farkin jet wash sprung a leak and lost all pressure
Finished the bike clean the old fashioned way then lubed it up again , then i tested all the brakes again and the back one the cable is sticking so its not releasing fully so it looks like it needs a new cable .
