Really pushed the boat out and got a new brake cable for the CAAD9. I'd had to replace the left shifter (15yo) as the ratchet had gone. Quite a relief I didn't have to get an overdraft, though it was a Jagwire cable.

To be fair, Shimano SP41 Optislick gear cables have been reasonable in price (£15), so has the higher end Jagwire I use on the MTB. I find 10 speed STI needs better cables.

The worst for trashing cables is my 11-speed Shimano 105, as it flexes in two different planes to get out of the hood. The 2010 Sora is the least troublesome, as it only flexes around the ratchet barrel.

I only changed the brake cable as it was frayed at the brake end - otherwise it was fine.

Only got 10 Speed STI 105 (it's the later design like the 11 speed) and standard stainless/PTFE cables started dragging at the rear gear loop due to crud getting in (it's on a cross bike so get's filthy) and this was within a year. The Optislick has so far lasted over a year

@briantrumpet - or Dura-Ace 9000, particularly the right-hand shifter. Somehow it seems to eat through gear cables at the shifter end. A problem which was fixed in the 9001.

But ... I've got three 9000 versions, as does son. no. 2. In a couple of years it'd have been cheaper to dump them and buy 9001's given how many gear cables we go through.

Yeah, it's really annoying, though as long as I remember to change the RH cable every year, it's no great expense or problem. That's on the bike out in France though, and I don't fancy snapping the cable with the only way home via a 1000m climb on two gears.

Yeah I prefer the old design too, where the cable comes out of the side of the shifter. Less friction, less fraying and really easy to maintain/change cables. Progress eh.
I always put some PTFE silicone grease on the part of the cable that gets chewed when I install them. Not sure if it makes a difference, but just feels right.
