The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - 6.5/10

One of the better romantic dramas I've seen with WW2 as a backdrop, mostly because it doesn't batter you over the head with over wrought sentimentality and completely implausible scenarios.

It's a bit twee in places and it's not particularly original but all the performances are strong, there is some incentive cinematography and the overall story is engaging.

Not my usual taste but I'm visiting people that will appreciate that so added it to tonight's watch list 👍

If you think that's weird, you'll love this:

Extravagant chases and shoot ‘em up, blow ‘em up scenes were refreshingly absent in this espionage thriller.

At first I though it was slow but realised it was just getting more and more intense.

A Real Pain..
Starring Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg as cousins taking a trip to Poland after the death of their Polish grandmother.
Thought it was good, made me laugh them question what I was laughing about and reflect on things.
8/10
Amora
After that positive I'm hardly going to mark this....total waste of time, thought it was crap.

Watched both recently. Enjoyed A Real Pain and with wifey being Polish added an extra dimension. Hard to believe one of the cast was in dirty dancing as Jennifer Grey looks a completely different person these days.

Oscar winner Mike Madison was certainly convincing as a hard nosed stripper and taking one’s kit off seems to boost Oscar chances. The cast of largely unknowns performed well with the back and forth between the pushy Russians and a plucky Anora at the core of an enjoyable film.

But best picture!? A poor year for films.

I didnt watch the Guernsey one in the end - the others had already seen it. So we watched another island based film:

The Banshees of Inisherin

A darkly comic tale of two friends, one of whom decides they arn't friends anymore. The plot isn't more complicated than that but it doesn't need to be, wonderfully understated throughout theres several laugh out loud moments at the various absurd and tragic actions of the characters.

Too much dark and not enough comic for me. Appreciated the quality but not an enjoyable watch.

A Finnish WWII story told in the style of Quentin Tarrantino. Basic story, a famous old Finnish commando beats off a bunch of Nazis. A wholly ridiculous storyline of course, full of ridiculous scenarios, ultra violence and blood and guts. Very silly but a good watch if you like that type of thing.

Just looked it up and its by the same director he did Football Factory (never seen) and Outlaw (worth a look) with, I suppose if you watched those and liked them it might be ok.

I enjoyed A Real Pain but didn't think it lived up to the 5 star reviews. The uptight/carefree (on the surface) comedy duo playing off one another is a pretty standard comedy trope. I know setting it in the context of the pain and trauma passed down through generations tried to frame it in a different context but it didn't feel like there was enough of this, it just felt more like a fairly straightforward light comedy.

One of the few Danny Dyer films I actually like and enjoy is the 2006 film Severance. Quite an unexpected film.

Overview
A weekend in the mountains goes horribly wrong for the sales team of a multi-national weapons company when they become the victims of crazed killers who will stop at nothing to see them dead.
