Beasts of the Southern Wild. A cracker, and quite unlike anything I've seen before. Told through the eyes of its six year old protagonist, it depicts a third world existence on the margins of American society, deep in the bayou. A first-time effort by its writer-director, apparently the actors were pretty much all non-actors, and a staggeringly good job they make of it. A glimpse into another world. 8/10.

Red 2.

Bad points - No discernable plot, improbable action scenes, dreadful weapons drills,

Good points - Helen Mirren, Anthony Hopkins, A Dillon Aero M134 Gatling gun.

4/10. Worth a watch only if you have nothing else to do, like have a 2 hour dump, or cut the grass.

Lemmy - The Movie.

A revealing insight into the great man. Fantastic footage of him playing Damage Case with Metallica, and that alone makes then film worth watching.

Interesting, absorbing, entertaining.

9/10.

Spooks: The Greater Good, Netflix

Rated as five stars, I was an on off fan of the series - it certainly built into quite a good show. Harry is the lead, playing it well, and it's like a big episode but it doesn't really cut it.

The plot is weak, motives are not believable, actions taken have little sense behind them...for example he calls a terrorist and a big scene is made of slinging the phone into the river. Ten seconds later the terrorist phones him up again.

Lord Percy of Blackadder fame put in a good and redeeming performance, but the new faces are playing thin characters.

The whole thing just doesn't add up, and is at no point believable in any quarter.

Ultimately disappointing, 4/10

A film I remember enjoying when I saw it on first release, that doesn't seem to have aged well in some ways. It's hard to engage with a loveable hitman character, and there's a very '80s movie self absorption and selfishness about the characters that makes them hard to like in general. It's saved by some nice jokes (the shootout in the convenience store, a subtler one following the disposal of a body) and Dan Ackroyd in what may be his last good role. Overall though, one of those films you wish you'd left back in the warm glow of memory.

Z for Zachariah Netflix

Not boring enough to put me to sleep in this heat.

What a waste of a few hours this movie is, the lead man is a jerk. He deserves bad things to happen to him. In no way could you root for this unpleasant human.

The leading lady is good though, much more interesting.

NOTHING HAPPENS.

2/10 FFS.

The book sounds a lot better.

Lone Survivor.

Loosely based on a true story of a failed snatch mission in The 'Stan, and the one surviving SEAL from the patrol being taken in and protected by Afghan villagers, adhering to an ancient code of honour which compels them to honour their guests.

Good points - Good weapons drills. Interesting to see the battlefield marksman version of the M4 in use. Loose interpretation of real events, and a brief documentary segment at the end explaining the aftermath.

Bad - I own furniture that could act better than Mark Wahlberg, the patrol discipline of the 4 man team was poor (you'd expect better from SEALs in real life , I'd hope), and the bad Taliban dude they were hunting was very obviously wearing eye make up to make him look even more scary and evil, but really made him look a bit comedic.

The Dying Of The Light, Netflix

I really need to get a job.

This is a CIA revenge cum "isn't dementia terrible" movie - I guess cooked up my marketing executives to appeal to the aging angry American male.

It could have taken a little from A Beuatiful Mind, but no this is all straight up as you find it, no twists. An old angry man goes off to kill someone he's hated for decades. Eventually he kills him.

Could've been much better as some of the cast had it in them.

I read that it was totally knackered by the studio, who did the final edit and made a mess of it. Whether the intended film would have been any better will forever be a mystery.
