Lone Survivor. For the second time. But this time with Danish sub-titles.

Still an alternatively horrifying and uplifting story.

You watched it twice?!

Personally I thought it was rubbish. And unrealistic. I don't care how "hard" you train yourself to be, you can't chuck yourself off cliffs and survive all the time. It was also very "America, f*ck yeah!" particularly in the last half hour. And that montage...

I watched the Evil Dead remake last night - 6/10

It's good, but has lost the humour which is a shame. As remakes go it's far from the worst and it's still pretty entertaining.

.

Isn't that rather the point of the narrative, that no matter how well trained, equipped, supported, gung-ho, bombastic or confident you are, survival was a matter of luck, and but for the chance intervention of strangers none would have survived?

As to realism; it wasn't a documentary, I'm not a US Navy Seal, and I've never fought the Taliban, but the central character wrote at length in real life as to how pleased he was with the portrayal of his experiences in a work of fiction.

Trollhunter (Netflix)

An unintentional found footage coincidence (having mentioned [REC]), a second viewing of Trollhunter. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed this, particularly the wearily competent Trollhunter himself, and the way it makes you see quite normal things in the landscape as the spoor of terrifying supernatural forces.

Troll Hunter's a cracking little film... possibly my favourite of the found footage films I've seen. I'll never look at power lines & pylons in the mountains the same way again.

Family went to the cinema today... Some went to see Zootopia and was told it was good.

I saw Kung Fu Panda 3. I would really like to have scored it but the inside of my eyelids occupied my time for a lot of the film. Very formulaic which means my 10 year old enjoyed it

"High Rise" -based on J G Ballard's dystopian book of the same name. I though it fantastic and really counjoured up Ballard's style and pretty close the book. Loved it. I wondered if those who hadn't read the book would follow it, but my Mrs, hasn't but still enjoyed it. She does "get" Ballard. Maybe not perfect, but awfully good - a superior movie.

Some great touches - despite being futuristic / sci-fi it's (sort of) set in the late early '70s so even the cars in the car park reflected this. Anyone who likes Ballard will love it. Anyone expecting terminator 3 will likely not enjoy it.

Was reading about the setting of the film the other day, it is set in the future but has to be before the time of social media or it wouldn't work....... Apparently.

Makes sense although I 'd not quite thought it through that far. On of Ballard's short story collections is entitled "myths of the near future" whose title would encompass quite a lot of his work and ideas, not least High Rise. Setting it a few years in the future of the '70s was a good decision for the film I think. Quite a few sci fi films have done similar using current technology rather than futuristic stuff - eg BSG and some modern Doctor Who, as it avoids it dating and helps keep focus on the story

Dr Strangelove.

Probably better watched in context when it was first released, still entertaining today though.

I can recommend "fail-safe". Basically the same plot as Strangelove, but in a very serious and dark movie. Top cast including Henry Fonda. Rather overshadowed by Strangelove unfortunately as it came out the same time.

We all went watching this also, I really wasn't looking forward to it, though rather enjoyed it

Still don't understand how two adults and four small children with cinema and a meal afterwards amounts to £160 lol

Strangeloves just come on to Netflix, so I'll save it for a rainy day.

The Signal
Nice sci Fi from the Sundance Festival, so it's got an independent low budget feel which suits true Sci Fi IMO.

Reviews draw to simplistic parallels to be taken seriously so Id suggest watching with an open mind if you liked things like Sunshine, Solaris, Dark City etc. It's not amazeballs but I'd give it...
