The Fall of the Essex Boys

For the, 'you slaaaaagg,' style voiceover alone the phrase, 'never have I see so much shoot in all my life,' is very appropriate.

Not a film, but the first episode of American Crime Story - 7/10

A dramatisation of the OJ trial, got off to a pretty good start.

This has Falchuck and Murphy all over it: direction, sound, set pieces, style of an era - all as skilful as what they achieved with Horror Story. They've got a good few of their favourite actors in there too, I think Paulson might once again steal the show.

However, John Travolta as Bobby Shapiro is just awful. It's like he's dead from the eyebrows down. A really distracting, almost cartoon villain performance. Which I suppose he is, but you can do that with a subtlety Travolta has always lacked.
I really enjoyed the first episode of this. I agree about Travolta and I'm not yet 100% convinced by Cuba Gooding as OJ, but Sarah Paulson is fantastic and the guy playing Johnny Cochran is ace too. I've seen the second episode too which, if nothing else, brings home just how bonkers everything got. You really couldn't make this story up.

Courtney Vance. Bit of a "Oh that guy".

Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films. A tremendously entertaining documentary about the Israeli cousins who made schlock movie after schlock movie after schlock movie and had a great time doing it.

Francofonia, a scrapbook of a film about the Louvre during the German occupation. More to do with art and the meaning of museums than the war, collaged together from archival, re-enacted and modern footage, stills, music and sweeping views of the museum. The voice-over is in Russian, natch, by director Alexander Sokurov as he skypes with the captain of a container ship losing its cargo to a mid-Atlantic storm. As the man from The Telegraph says:
"The film’s theme is the nature of museums themselves: what they tell us about our grasp of time, their historical function in empire-building, the way in which they foster the harvesting and hoarding of culture, and how those very acts alter our understanding of power, both personal and political."
The ending is quite sudden but reminiscent of Rothko. What's not to like?

Mission impossible. Rogue nation. I enjoyed the others but this is not as good. I cant put my finger on why. The Simon Pegg character does not work for one thing.
Stil,l as I am sat in a hotel room in Stavanger, it whiled away a few hours.
6/10.

Again, not quite a film but...

Making a Murderer - 6/10

A solid but at times frustrating account of Steven Avery. It's a pretty damning critique of the American legal process, and the commitment of the filmmakers is impressive. But some parts are repetitive and it really could have used a narrator to move things along.
don't we have a 'what documentary?' thread for these types of things?

Went to see "Dad's Army" at the flicks. I did enjoy it though I know it has had a bit of a bashing. As long as you don't expect the old cast (Ian Lavender and the only survivor, the vicar make appearances) it's a creditable effort. If you go, hang about for the outtakes towards the end of the titles.
Nice to see Old Bridlington and South Landing Flamborough. (Edit. It was actually North landing with the Lifeboat house).

Interesting: I thought it was the best one of the franchise.
