Kramer v Kramer. Hoffman & Streep on top form, and one of the all time great kid performances. Easy to see why it swept the Oscars.

The Impossible - a 2012 film based on the true story of the experiences of a family hit by the tsunami of Christmas 2004. I know I spend much of my life semi-conscious, but how this one totally missed my radar is a bit of a mystery to me. Not that I would have gone to see but, but I'd never even heard of it. Very good it was. The depiction of the actual wave, and the experience of being swept away by it, was gut-wrenchingly well done, and both it and the aftermath were filmed on an epic scale, providing a suitably dramatic backdrop to the playing out of a small but very human story. Even the child actors were excellent - not always the case in British movies. A good solid 8. I still don't quite understand how it remained so anonymous.

The Imitation Game. Well made bio of Alan Turing, his life, his relationships, his work.

Kill the Messenger. A little bit of education for me, based on a true story.

Birdman. Surprisingly good. Not usually the kind of movie I watch but thought I'd give it a shot. Glad I did.

Recently finished the Harry Potter films by watching the last two Deathly Hallows. I was unaware about Snape.

Currently ploughing my way through Game of Thrones with my wife, trying to work out if it's Tolkein with tits or Medieval Emmerdale.
Films have mostly been family stuff (summer holidays innit). Million dollar arm is quite a decent disney film and one from my childhood, Big. Still charming and lovely as I remember it.

That's the best 2-word description of it yet!

Prometheus. Fantastic special effects, which must have looked great on the big screen, but even then it would have been a great steaming pile of poo. By contrast, the night before I watched The Life of Pi, which also had astounding special effects (I only found out later that the animals were all CGI - I'd thought they were real!), but also took the precaution of having some engaging characters and an actual...what's that thing some old movies have?...oh yeah: story.

Hard to be a God

Based on a Russian sci-fi book from the 60s it's set on an alien planet where evolution hasn't got past the middle ages. Earth has fired up scientists to investigate them and one of them has become a god - you follow him around a bewildering world as he starts to unravel, eventually losing the plot and killing his followers (I think, it could have been just a bunch of people).

I can't really give this a rating as I'm still not entirely sure what was going on. Big on concept and allegory, light on dialogue, massive cast, visually amazing, incredibly long. More of a moving painting than a film really.

I've bought the book which will apparently make more sense of the film.
