I saw Milk - Sean Penn in a very good movie.

Nah, he's done nothing good since Carlito's Way.

Exactly. He's trading on his history, and he's done it over and over again. Mickey Blue Eyes was the same with Caan, at least Pacino or Duvall have never demeaned their history like that (Brando did in The Freshman)

De Niro is taking parts that are way beneath him, he's capitalising on great films to make films that are a load of mince.

I disagree.

The man's allowed to have a bit of fun in his films, and if that means laughing at an ancient stereotype so be it.

You used to get Olivier slumming it, for years he popped up in all sorts of dross, often with a ridiculous Mittel European accent (Boys from Brazil, Jazz Singer, Bridge Too Far, Marathon Man) and Burton made some absolute stinkers, but neither traded on their history to the same degree as De Niro has. I actually turned The Family off; it was too violent and badly misjudged, but you can't deny that it was a total Scorcese rip-off. Besson's done nothing for ages, I haven't seen Lucy but it looks mince and AGAIN you've got Freeman playing the Brainiest Man In The World. PANTS.

Marathon Man was an excellent thriller, and Larry himself scarily good as the Nazi fugitive. To be fair to Olivier he's always the character he'playing, rather than himself - just like Alec Guiness or Gary Oldman.

And though far from Luc B's magnificent best I though Lucy was.OK if a missed opportunity. Freeman is indeed exactly as he always is it must be admitted.

If someone believes a film is a good one then it's reasonable to point out that audiences didn't think so and that the film lost £20 million. That's not opinion, it's fact.
The corollary to this, of course, being Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, a staggeringly crass, disjointed load of nonsense with massively unlikeable characters and action scenes that could well have been coathangers whirling around a tumble dryer for all I could tell (or care) that still made $830m at the box office.

I watched Rush, the bio-pick of James Hunt and Niki Lauder.
Found it a bit laboured and obvious (in a Ron Howard way) at times but entertaining enough.
Found the scene of Lauder post accident having his lungs vacuumed particularly disturbing (in a non-Ron Howard way)
Disturbing to the extent that I actually passed out in my chair for a brief spell. Not too good with medical procedures . Came around a moment later very dazed and confused.

For a proper retro race movie, it has to be Le Mans.
