I enjoyed it as well. Like you said though sometimes the subtitles were not always visible white on light grey etc.

Luckily I am learning Spanish which is why I watched it in the first place!
I tend to avoid subtitled films because I can't read very fast and anything more than 1 long line or 2 short lines of text and I'm stuck having to use pause all the time or my husband has to read it to me (sadly some really enjoyable Chinese films have been disastrous for me because of this!). The only exceptions have been German films (which i used to be fluent in but not anymore) or languages where they are similar to German or French (which was compulsory for the 7 years I was at secondary school).

One of my favourite furrin films, Nightwatch, has brilliant subtitles which interact with the film. Well worth watching if you haven't seen it. I believe it's the most commercially successful Russian film ever made, and on a shoestring budget too. The book series it's based on is also quality.

Over the last few days I've watched...

Drop Dead Gorgeous - 6/10

A Christopher Guest style take on beauty pageants. Very funny, and very dark.

The Family - 6/10

Silly, violent and entertaining, which is pretty much par for Luc Besson.

The Hunt - 9/10

Confirms Mads Mikkelsen as one of my favourite actors. He is absolutely compelling in a brutally bleak tale of false accusation and mistrust.

Knucklehead - 1/10

When the WWE Productions credit rolled at the start I knew it wasn't going to be easy. I lasted 20 minutes before giving up.

I watched 'The Sweeney' with Ray Winstone.
It was ok, probably a 6/10, but why do British films like this really have to over do the whole cockney thing and the constant swearing...... Quite cringe worthy actually, and I'm from Looondaaan !!!

American Sniper.......I expected more, it as ok nothing special....Bradley Cooper was good but no more, just a run of the mill war film...oscar nomination not sure what for.....

The Guardian did an article on how the film was a right-wing parade of despicable nonsense where the only foreigners killed were terrorists or killed by terrorists. Mendacious Gung ho rabid justification for murder. The comments ran to 3000 and were polarised between:

"These men man the barricades, you have no idea"

To

"It's a a film, it's allowed to be dramatically enhanced"

The Sweeney was an awful, horrible film that demeaned the series. His affair with the much younger woman was icky. The plot made no sense. Terrible film, I've seen better film on coffee.

I love the original series, and that's what's put me off watching this film.

Is the only thing it has in common the title?

The thought of Ray Winstone playing Ray Winstone makes it sound as if it's like all the other modern British gangster films.

There are some things that shouldn't be remade, I think there's another thread on here if my mmemory serves me right?

I saw the Dark Knight for the first time the other day. I don't do the celebrity dead worship thing but Heath Ledger put in a brilliant turn as the Joker. The Harvey Dent character aside, the rest seemed to be acting by numbers, Christian Bale particularly dull. Quite enjoyed it.

Navy Seals 8, Behind Enemy Lines...(I think thats what it was called)
Special forces go into Africa to eliminate a uranium mine and the baddies.
Well...every one of them probably had a million bullets in each gun, a single RRG could explode 4 times, one seal musta took out an entire towns worth of people and dodged 2 million bullets, loads of overacting etc etc.
What a crock of....
