Similarly annoying is 'aks' for ask

You’ll find that ‘ax’ is a very old pronunciation, dating back to well before Chaucer. It’s even used in the first complete English translation of the bible: “Axe and it shall be given”

The usage ‘ask’ took over in the 17th century.

Why "a bit 80's"?

I have heard that expression all my life.

I believe it originally derives from talking about plants, and the common or garden variety being one an average person might grow in their garden.

I didn't hear it in the 60s,70s, 90's and beyond, but early 80s it was everywhere.

Not disputing that you heard it, but was it you saying it?

Just testing the water; is the h in herb supposed to be pronounced?

I have strong feelings on this and will fight you if you are wrong. Its just that if I am in the minority, the bouts will have to be arranged in shifts.

‘erb is how the Americans pronounce it
