@ColinJ this morning at 6am here in Glasgow I rode to work in leggings and shorts (not summer or winter cycling gear, just normal clothing), a long sleeve plus a short sleeve t-shirt, a windproof jacket. It was overcast.
At 3 pm I rode home minus jacket and long sleeve T. It was sunny and warm enough to do some gardening. It felt too hot with the leggings on.
As I write, I want to put the heating on, the temperature dropped quite a bit after 6pm.
If you're heading up North, as @SatNavSaysStraightOn says, rethink your packing

Loving my recently purchased winter bib tights from planet-x. Keeps me toasty warm on the midnight commute.

I don't plan to wear a jacket until it dtops below 0c.

You may need to rethink that one. Even I am taking one of my winter weight sleeping bags with me for our camping tour starting a week tomorrow and we are only covering England!
(Lakes. Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland, North York Moors and Peak District). We decided against Scotland this year after last year's weather. 2 days where we were roasted alive and the 'not enough' water problems, followed by 3 days of torrential non-stop rain and not a stitch of dry clothing between us! then gales and snow topped it off and we aborted at Glencoe.

Also if you are up there around the 13-14th September you will need to have your accommodation pre-booked. The Rat Race coast to coast challenge is on that weekend. We 'collided' with it last year and ran into a few issues with accommodation as a result, including campsites! Mind you with the gales bringing trees down camping was the least of our concerns! Though re-reading it you say only the 1st week of September, so you might be luckier with the weather... take the suncream as well!

My sisters have booked our accommodation. We will either be in luxury static caravans or wooden lodges which will be nice and warm!

There is talk of going up Ben Nevis, but the last time we went to Scotland (at the end of May/start of June) someone died after getting caught in a blizzard on the mountain, so I am not taking any chances. Unless we get a virtually guaranteed nice day

I don't need to worry about wet/dirty kit - IIRC, washing machines are available on the site. Even if they are not, I have relatives just down the road so I can do a wash there if I need to.

If the site wifi is working I will post some ride reports while I am up there. If not, I'll do it when I get back.

I will be taking suncream, and I also have some Avon So Soft in case the midges want to come out to play. My skin reacts badly to insect bites so I have to be careful not to let the little swines feast on me.

It was raining here this afternoon so I waited until 6pm to go out on my bike. The sun was shining when I set off, but it was pretty windy and the air was chilly. It definitely felt more like the end of September or even October, rather than the end of August.

Having been distracted by the talk of Scottish weather, I forgot to answer the original question!

I have a selection of autumn/winter kit ...

I have lightweight overshoes to keep the chill off my feet on milder days, and heavy-duty neoprene ones for cold and/or wet days.

I have long-fingered Windstopper gloves for dry days, and more water-resistant gloves for wet ones. (They are supposed to be waterproof but they always let water through in the end. On bad days, I sometimes take a spare pair of gloves to change into if the first pair get soaked.)

On milder days I wear one of my buffs on my head. In more severe weather I wear a Gore skull cap, with the option to cover my ears with it. I often wear a second buff round my neck when it is cold, to stop cold draughts down my neck, and giving me the option to pull it over the bottom of my face.

I always wear cycling glasses to keep insects and cold wind out of my eyes. Usually clear or yellow lenses later in the year.

On milder autumn days, I would probably wear 3/4 length shorts or tights. On cold days, full-length winter tights, possibly with an old pair of bibshorts underneath. For really bad days, I have a pair of full-length tights with windproof/waterproof fronts.

I would wear a long-sleeved base layer on top. In the autumn, I would usually wear a short-sleeved jersey and arm-warmers over that so I could roll down the arm-warmers or even remove them if it got too warm. Long-sleeved jersey in colder conditions. I wear a wind-proof gilet on all days from chilly to warm. On cold or wet days I would wear my heavy-duty Endura Commuter Jacket.
