That's every time I use the bike, no matter what distance, in winter I'll carry and extra pair of gloves (so I can switch from long fingered to short) and my trusty Camelbak and food on long distances.

Here's a tip. One £20 note is a lot lighter than twenty £1 coins.

It's broken down into £10 / £5 / £4 coins / 50p / 5x 10p ... I'm not bothered about weight saving

I suppose I'm not either. My wallet contains 4 credit cards, several shop loyalty cards, Security card for Jaguar's Engineering Dept and about £200 in notes.

There is always the off chance I see a nice bike for sale where the seller doesn't know what he's selling for circa £100. One 531 sports bike for £70 a few years back, resold for £150.

I squeeze all the air from the inner tubes I carry, and then wrap them up with a short length of duct tape. It keeps the space they take up to a minimum, and is really useful if you need a tyre boot when a sidewall splits. A couple of sticking plasters can be quite useful too.

Multi-tool, water and a rear bag to put clothes in as I overheat. That's it. I use M+'s so don't expect a puncture and I never take my mobile as I enjoy my cycling immensely, it's how I "escape".

tyre levers, one tube, gas[sub] [/sub]canister (because it's small and quicker than a pump), small multitool, small purse (well, you never know, you might get hungry) phone and housekeys. All fit in my little saddle bag. If it don't fit in the bag, it ain't coming  I like to travel light.

Anymore than one unplanned deflation... i call my dad

I always always carry ID. I've a crap memory (so it helps to remind me who I am... no) so it's amazing I remember to take it. I use my old Chiltern Railway's wallet thing to carry my club licence and ID, a couple of bits of paper and a stubby pencil, a phone card, a couple of stick-on patches and a €10 note.

Into shirt pockets; food (flapjack/jam sandwich and banana), mobile, some bog roll and maybe my pertex jacket if the weather looks iffy.

Saddle bag has spare tubes, tyre levers, p repair kit, latex gloves, multitool plus any bike specific tools, (e.g. 8mm spanner and Surly Jethro spanner on my fixed.) Aside: Rather than pfaffing around, or forgetting more like, I have each bike kitted with it's own saddle bag and tools. Yes, it means 3 multitools etc, but I reckon it's safer/easier that way.

Equally, each bike has it's own frame mounted pump. Mini pumps on fixed and race bike, zefal frame pump on audax bike. Only my audax bike is kitted with lights full time (and I regularly check the batteries!). If I'm likely to be riding in the dark on the other bikes then I fit lights as and when needed.

i always take my fully charged nokia n95 8gb phone as if nothing else is great as has sat nav and google maps on as i made a hadlebar mount for it , chocolate bars or some other food depending how long im out, water bottle and spare drink in rucksack, tools, a tiny rachet screwdriver with flat and philips bits inside the handle, it came from pound shop and is great if you need to adjust the srews in deraileurs etc, small adjustable spanner, allen keys, tyre levers pucture kit plus one spare tube, pump is a mini pump which is double action in and out stroke pumping and pretty accurate built in gauge fits on bike so no worries there, a wooly hat gloves and a a collar type scarf you never know when temp will drop even more.
the rucksack is very small but all this equipment goes in with more room if needed for anything else but once on i virtually don,t feel any weight at all  i don,t bover with my locks cos i wont leave my bike anywhere if i can help it i have known the best locks you can buy to be no match for a thief.......

Towel. Nobodys mentioned towel.

And a length string. Definately a length of string.

Perhaps a small cooker and associated cuttlery and crockery.

Maybe a tent, one man only. That way if you meet a lady on route they have to stay close and keep you warm........
