Blimey ! I have been travelling light with just me phone !
Must have been lucky up till now.
I don't like stuffing pockets with stuff, so is a saddle bag the way to go?

Yeah a saddle bag is definitely a benefit. Fits most things in that you need, especially for repairs on the side of the road.

Food and drink is also pretty key.

Everyone else seems to have mentioned most things above!

add up what everyone has suggested and you will be needing a sherpa!
You need to be able to do 3 things out on your bike, repair a puncture, fix a chain and true a wheel, anything else would be very bad luck, I suppose you could add a mobile if all else fails.

No Dude! Travel as light as you can for now. When the "bad-stuff visits" from the Fairy come your way, maybe you will want to change, but for now stay light and care-free.

Have fun.

Certainly have fun . But you won't stay carefree for long if you have a puncture. Or you get thirsty, worse if you get hungry in the middle of nowhere. And you'll be less than carefree if your bike gets nicked because you skimped on a lock.

Stay light by all means, but certain things are essential!

In my PRK, the necessary stuff to get me riding again if a tube punctures; and/or repair multiple pinholes in tubes.

In my zipbag there are my wallet, phone, membership cards, spare sandpaper, pen, a couple of plastic bags, flexible connector for presta valve and a teaspoon.
Commuting, there will also be my USB stick, security card and spare batteries.

Everything in backpockets.

I've always got:

Spare tube
Fix kit
Pump
Lightweight waterproof jacket
Mobile phone
£20 cash(taxi)
Cereal or choccie bar

From that lot my mobile is the most used item.

On my road bike I have a little saddle bag which contains:
spare tube
tyre levers
chain tool
magic chain link thing
piece of string
and I occasionally cram a lightweight waterproof in there too

On the bike frame I have a pump and one or two bottles of water or energy drink.

In my back pockets I carry
mobile phone
credit card
small amount of cash
cereal bars

If you choose to wear a helmet, put a sticker inside it somewhere with your name and next-of-kin details. Doesn't work if you're not a helmet wearer, of course!

Edited to add that I have a multi tool in my saddlebag too.

That's every time I use the bike, no matter what distance, in winter I'll carry and extra pair of gloves (so I can switch from long fingered to short) and my trusty Camelbak and food on long distances.

From everyone else's lists, I can only presume you all eat your Muller Rice with a tyre lever...
