Unfortunately I don't think Evans qualifies as a local bike shop any more. One of the advantages of getting your bike built up by a truly local shop like Paul Hewitt is that you can specify exactly which components you want right down to the bar tape and bottle cage.

Having said that I wouldn't worry too much. You seem to be enjoying the bike and I don't suppose that the difference between the two cranksets is really that great - though I am sure a Compag expert will be on in a minute to tell me how wrong I am.

I am enjoying the bike mate. It makes me feel thin. It makes me want to stick 3 fingers up at life and ride into oblivion, such is the power of marketing.

The principle difference between Mirage and Veloce chainsets is that the Mirage inner ring is steel...plus although both cranks are available in black Mirage is matt, Veloce is gloss.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Isn't another major difference that as from 2009 Xenon and Mirage are discontinued and Veloce becomes the start level Campag groupset? Also the 2009 version appears to be available in black only - the only part not in black being the front changer cage (oddly IMO).

That is kind of true but also not...depending on the components....for example 2009 Veloce brakes are billed as being available in two options; differential skeleton (which is admittedly new for Veloce and Centaur) and dual pivot....but rather than have skeleton dual pivot like last year's Veloce they are actually old solid Mirage with a Veloce transfer on it!

The 2009 Veloce cassette is actually the galvanised Mirage cassette :ohmy:

The rear mech is a rebadged Mirage

The 2009 Veloce cranks have all alloy rings though.

So, no difference at all then, in a practical sense.

Well the teeth will go rusty if you use it in winter....although if you save your steel inner ring for your best bike.........it will not wear out as quick as an alloy one would.

Yes, Bianchi (and a lot of others) are doing that routinely, even on higher specs bikes. They keep the original parts for levers and rear derailleur, but brakes and cranks are quite often alternative (cheaper) ones. Nearly all Bianchi have FSA cranksets instead of the advertised Centaur/Chorus/Record.

Crap.
The bike fits me fine, it's comfy and a pleasure to ride. It is also the biggest frame size they have. The top tube lenghth is the same as my 64 dawes which is as long as I'd want it.

OK, I stand corrected. Seeing the two of them together shows me that the curvature of the toptube on the Bianchi was what had me foxed. It makes the bike look smaller. Apols.

(Still think you're a freak, though )
