middle of nowhere in France
when you first started out.
I have bought some cycling shorts and a VERY bright pink top that is supposed to help with the sweating thing;
There is no way i could wear T shirt yet but shorts yes, but i need something to go over them - bum looks bigger than ever in them
At the moment i wear track suit pants tucked into my socks (i have no chain cover thingy) a T shirt and trainers;
So if you are cycling in france and see a wobbly old lady wearing salmon pink pants and a pink baseball cap do say hello xxxxx

how about some mountain bike shorts - they're more baggy and then they wont cover your lower legs - negating the need to tuck into socks

I would first consider visibility for safety if you are thinking of riding on the road. Anything bright in colour will help drivers notice you easier. Depending on the weather and the sustained effort will help you decide if you need long sleeve, short sleeve, cotton or lycra. Sweating a lot in a cotton t-shirt will be uncomfortable but you can get pretty cold in lycra if you are not putting enough effort you warm up. Same goes for shorts / pants.

I still have my love shapes and I don't like admiring myself wearing tight stuff. Although I'm a size M for shirts, I got a size XL jersey in bright red which is very comfortable and doesn't look funny at all. If anything, makes me look more athletic ... or at least is what I chose to believe anyway :smile:

I still wear what I did when I started out.

A pair of Lycra cycling shorts beneath a pair of baggy mountain bike style shorts, on the top half I wear a brightly coloured cycling T-Shirt such as my current one, it's orange which is not only breathable but also visible from a long distance.
Then on the head, a helmet and a pair of cycling sunglasses which not only keep the sun out of my eyes but also helps keeping out bits of grit, dust or midges etc.

Cycling shorts, I recently purchased a WHITE PAIR purely because I want to look tanned (which probably won't happen) and a cycling jersey, or an old football shirt if I have my post bag on the bike. Pulling my socks up I think is cool, but my colleagues laugh. I don't think anyone appreciates my *amazing* dress sense

Started out as I meant to go on with lycra bibs etc. Got some stick at work for a while, soon stopped though, folk now expect it of me. Still have the odd daft question, I'm walking through site fully kitted up, "On your bike today" ? comes the question, "Nope, in the car" is my usual reply.....

1975 Football shorts and plimsoles, t-shirt, wooly jumper and a cagool. From which I slowly graduated into having all the right Assos, Sidi, Endura, Gore, and etc. From which I graduated to jeans, t-shirt and Converses, with optional jumper and denim jacket. You know. Like a normal person.
