Just to focus things a little, are you mostly thinking about comfort, lightness, range of gears or something else? (117 miles is a long way for me - I'd be looking for a new set of leg muscles but I'll assume you're confident about the physical demands.)

I'll raise you £50 but a 2012 Defy 1 (assuming the sizing works) http://www.ashcycles.com/site/giant-defy-1-2012-15percent-worth-of-free-goods

Otherwise another more sportive geometried bike like the Cannondale Synapse or even (and I can't believe I am saying this) a Spesh Secteur (to get a better spec on the relatively costly Specialized, look for used - new £850 only gets Sora versus Tiagra on the £900 CDale or 2013 Giant, 105 on the 2012 Defy 1)

Or you could look at Wiggle's range, Merlin's Ridley deals, such as

, or indeed Ribble or Dahon's offerings

Have a Secteur, love it. More relaxed frame does me very well. When buying N+1 I might look for something a bit more arse in the air, but this is a lovely bike.

117 miles for a newbie on a CAAD could be hard work?

But EBC do have good deals on other bikes, eg 2013 Defy 1

OP - with that budget, I'd be visiting all of my local LBS's, as you'll want to try and test ride

Remember specialized, specialized and specialized. Then when in doubt specialized.
Takes the young naive kid who decided not to pick specialized and does not like the bike a much.
SECTEUR SPORT TRIPLE, a little over.

Why? Unless you want to ride the same bike as every other MAMIL out there ;)

I've never ridden a Cannondale but they seem to have an excellent reputation for comfort and ride quality. I simply don't know from experience. And I don't know how arduous these 117 miles are going to be. Sometimes it's all about the hike and not about the bike.

I put the CAAD 8 triple on there coz the extra gears on 117 miles may be needed towards the end and I have also heard good reviews as to the comfort...but one mans bed of nails is another mans mattress so to speak.

I would also find the bike that feels best by trying as many as poss before buying

Definitely see if you can find any of the suggested bikes locally to try as they will be different to your old bike and you will need to find out whether a CAAD type of bike is what you are looking for over the Synapse that Cannondale make.

I did 103 miles from Cardiff to Tenby last month on my Cannondale and many more miles in between and can definitely recommend it. However if you want something a bit racier, look at the CAAD range as that will suit you more. Same goes for the Specialized/Giant/other brands who have 2 types of styles with their road bikes.
