The Dead's rather special Get Shown The Light Box Set arrived this week; including, of course, 8 May 1977 at Cornell (finally achieving official release on its 40th anniversary) - source of one's mesmerising and exhilarating signature link below.

Unsurprisingly, the 15,000 special edition sets sold out in a couple of days; the music's mercifully still available as a digital download, though.

There's even a whole book about 8 May now:

Some of these young uns think they can play guitar a bit but this guy was the master.

He was superb, and produced all sorts of energising and uplifting sounds one just wouldn't have expected from his appearance.

I loved the way he would follow up a slow blues like that with something faster, such as this brilliant Short Fuse at Carnegie Hall, 1985.

Whatever he played, though, he'd always wring the neck of that Telecaster like his life depended on it (which it pretty much did).
