Or even worse those with a tiny bit of knowledge. Like the guy who owned ours before us . Finally after 17 years I think I have sorted all the dodgy stuff .

How the wiring never went bang I will never know !
It really is quite remarkable what you discover when you lift up a floor as regards plumbing and electrics. Sometimes I just can't help myself and simply have to rectify the howlers. Other times I just shrug and think "Oh well, it's staggered along for the last forty years, it'll probably stagger on for some time to come".
The big mistake is to have a peek in the first place.

Remind me not to buy a house or bike for that matter off some of you lot.

If you change your mind, I can do you this, low mileage, one careful owner from new, lightweight racer for a very reasonable price. (I will put a good saddle on it)

I am a spark. No way the install wasn't getting tested, especially when I saw the multiple consumer units and undersize tails from various Henley blocks.

The strangest was the close to 40 metres , yes 40 metres of copper under the bathroom floor going long circuitous routes for hot, cold , tanked cold , and heating. New floor was going down anyway so up came the floorboards to take it out and put a sensible amount of barrier speed fit . Copper got weighed in too ;)

Of course lifting the floor uncovered the horrors of the poor joinery with the boards holding the joists up rather than the correct way. Sort of explained why was impossible to keep the shower tray sealed !

Here's the final report...
I abraded the pipework all over with 36 grit paper, then wrapped it in a poultice of ridiculously strong citric acid for a few hours to dissolve the hard water encrustations, then rinsed and dried the area.
Next step, squirt some sanitary silicone mastic into any visible gaps , and generally smear it about. I let it cure for a day
Then, bandaged it with 25mm glassfibre tape and resin. The resin is OK for about 20 minutes for each application. I used two brews of about 150 ml and about 5 metres of tape, cut into more easily handleable 500mm lengths. Messy, because I didn't have proper access to the back and top of the pipe, but it wasn't too bad, apart from the co-lateral damage.

Here it is. I'm not sure if I'll Denso tape it. If I do, and it still leaks, I'll know that I really must have done something quite appalling in a previous life.

BTW, I'm not sure that @screenman will be entirely happy with my efforts....

EDIT: Apart from one in a BUPA hospital, that has to be one of the world's most expensive bandages.

Fibreglass and plastic may part company in time, which is why we do not use it on plastic bumpers. So no not impressed, I hope it lasts for you though.

I don't know about your bumpers, but mine are not made from UPVC. It's quite usual to bond UPVC pipe fittings into GRP pond liners.

Do a bit of research and you may find the two are not compatible, just saying and I hope your bodge serves you well.

Anyway, let's agree to disagree. I wrapped some Denso round the whole thing and stuck up the plasterboard ceiling, so there's no point in me agonising about it any longer. What will be will be.

As you say a good source of info, even more so when they say the words reasonable strong, which to me means weak.

It will work hopefully long enough for you.
