Slippery scientist
I’m not one for welling up, but there’s a song that I listened to a lot at uni. I have never been really ‘into’ music but I like what I like and always just treated songs as a musical distraction - I never understood about the ‘meaning’ or motivation for a song. Anyway, I had listened to this song over and over, knew the lyrics but one day I had an epiphany - I literally stopped singing along and said “Oh!” out loud, to myself. I had devined the meaning of the lyrics (which seems obvious in hindsight) and it was the first song that ever really hit me as having a back story, and a sad one at that. I still listen to it now but always with a hint of sadness.

The song is by a band called River City People and is called Carry the Blame.

What would he look like, who would he talk like,
Would he have your eyes?
Would she have your smile, gentle and so kind,
Would she tell my lies?

I hide my head in the sand
Escape, and wash my hands, but I'm not clean
Something screams at me on the day you should have been
Are we hopelessly insane?
Relentless we remain. I hear my name
Read out to me the day you should have been

Each day I carry the blame
Cover the cost
Of those children whose names,
Forever are lost
We must be guilty of murder.
Measure my words
Of babies whose crying

Will never be heard.

What would he look like, who would he talk like,
Would he have your eyes?
Would she have your smile, gentle and so kind,
Would she tell my lies?

I'm losing my appetite, I cry through my dreams
I can´t stop thinking to myself, I wonder what should have been
- oh what should have been?

Each day I carry the blame
Cover the cost
Of those children whose names,
Forever are lost
We must be guilty of murder.
Measure my words
Of babies whose crying
Will never be heard”

I like Skol

A Minging Manc...
And then came the announcement over the loudspeaker
"Would those having relatives or friends on Flight number 1203
Please report to the chapel across the street at once"
Then I felt a burning break deep inside

And I knew the heavenly ebony skies
Had taken my life's most wonderful prize
My beautiful Ebony Eyes
If I ever get, to heaven I'll bet
The first angel I'll recognise
She'll smile at me and I know she will be
My beautiful Ebony Eyes

The Everly Brothers
Ebony Eyes
