I would like to know how many of you also hate having wet bike seats. Whats your favourite solution for dealing with it?

I am doing a project designing a retractable bike seat cover, that covers your seat in the day then when you return the cover retracts back into a device under the seat leaving you to ride away dry.

What do you think of this idea?

Where do you put the plastic bag after you used it? In your back pack or pocket? Would it not be easier to have one that retracts away ?

The one i am designing, has the device that holds the retracted seat cover that clips onto the pole under the seat, so the seat cover cannot be stolen, it would have to be removed with an allen key of the right size.

I see a lot of people with a carrier bag wrapped around...though they always seem to just be sitting on that, so get a wet arse anyway.

It wouldn't be something I would buy. If my seat is wet I'd just run my hand across it to get rid of any big drop of water, or use a tissue. Chances are, if my seat is wet, I'm going to get wet too so doesn't really make any difference.

My bike is always parked under cover, and if it was wet i would do the same as what has been mentioned above.

Have answered the other thread, but a comment here that is more constructive.

For many the area of seatpost below the seat is a place for a bag containing spares, and for lights.

You would have to include room for this.

Sell it to some BSO stockist supermarket Argos..... I am sure it will prove invaluable for that market..
for me as a rider you have solved a problem that dont exist for me

Honestly? I think it's probably superfluous. Most saddles have rails underneath where you can tuck a plastic bag or shower cap, and most people who think to do anything about it do that. Or carry a plastic bag in a pocket or bag. Many saddles can simply be wiped dry with a sleeve anyway - although gel saddles do tend to be absorbant.

Brooks saddles already have a cover available that rolls up and velcros to the rails, so it's not a brand new idea.

That said, there are always some people who'll buy anything new - I'm just not sure if the market will be big enough....

Sorry, not very positive - but then I'm a pretty frugal sort and might not be the target market.

If you can price match a free supermarket carrier bag then I'd be interested. I keep my carrier bag stuffed under the seat between the seat rails. Has worked faultlessly for the past six years.

If you can design one that folds away in under the second or so it takes to scrunch up a carrier bag and shove it in a pocket...

Also replied more fully in your other thread

Quick question, do you cycle? It's interesting how often we get questions from design students and the like who seem to have got the idea that there's a problem when a) there isn't, or B) anyone who owns a bike has already solved it or bought the thing that does...

I think you're getting into overkill. Most cyclists use a plastic bag or cheap shower cap. The risk of theft is minimal.

Slippy, a warning - multiple posting of the same question in several sections is arguably spamming, especially, as you seem to have joined purely to do this. You're sailing close to getting threads deleted.
