I'm bit of science (and numbers nerd) too.

So, my nerdie friend, what do you think of my simple suggestion of measuring waist size to measure progress in losing fat? I know it is not precise but it does at least show progress. I'd be interested to hear your views.

Central obesity is also closely linked to risk of Type 2 diabetes, http://www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us...nes-put-thousands-at-risk-of-Type-2-diabetes/ so improving the waist measurement has also been linked with a risk reduction.

Makes sense that a reducing waistline is a clear indication of weight loss - I lost about a stone last year through increased exercise that was clearly demonstrated through a tightening belt.

Actually, if like, me, your real aim is fat loss as oppose to weight loss I believe the best and easiest measure should be your waist size.

Part of my exercising involves upper body strength weight training and I know I've put some muscle on my arms and chest - plus my legs are firmer from the cycling. So just going by the scales will give the wrong impression. It's my waist size that gives me the best indication.
On the scales thing. Between October and Christmas my time on the bike dropped thru the floor. My diet pretty much stayed constant and so did my upper body shape although I lost 2-3kg. I have a hunch some came off leg muscles but is it really possible to loose that much off your legs? I was certainly no racer and didn't have big legs, but was pushing a touring bike up a fair amount of hills most weekends and dropped down to pretty much just the commute by December (ice, dark, x2 manflu).
