Hi guys,

My weight has been stable for roughly two months. (I have been on steroids and have gained a lot, only on a tiny tiny dose now)

I start cycling and suddenly gain weight.

I have checked my diet and I'm at about a -400 deficit. I don't expect to lose weight, it's only been a week, but I don't expect to gain it. I remember this happened the last time I took up cycling too. Why does this happen?

Cheers

Water retention. The exercise is causing tiny tears in your muscles, and your body is holding water, which it needs to help repair them. It's totally normal, and will settle down once your body has adapted to the new exercise.

I put on weight as I cycled more regulary, this is because I became leaner and increased my muscle mass as muscle weighs more than fat.

EDITED : realise how stupid this comment is upon re-reading it. I knew what I meant but my fingers for typing and brain were running at different speeds. Clarification of this comment continues further down this thread and hopefully makes more sense :-)

I often see variations of several pounds during the passage of a week. If you drank a litre of water and weighed yourself before you peed or sweated any of it out, that would be 2.2 pounds for a start.

I wouldn't worry about individual weight readings. You could try weighing yourself first thing in the morning every day and then average the 7 readings at the end of each week. That would tend to smooth out the daily fluctuations and reveal the underlying trend.

What you really mean is that the weight of muscle you gained is greater than the weight of fat that you lost.

The density of muscle might be greater than that of fat, but that isn't really relevant unless you somehow replaced a certain volume of fat with exactly the same volume of muscle, which isn't very likely.

What I mean is that from the age of 16 to the age of 30 I weighed 54kg and did not put on weight no matter what I ate. I now weigh 62kg and the only thing which has changed since the age of 30 is that I started distance running and cycling. I still fit in the exactly same sized clothes but have dropped from a 28inch waist to a 27inch waist.... I have not got physically bigger but weigh more, make of that what you wish.

You're a bad man V ;)

I wish, Its my life ambition to weigh as much as an adult. I look like bob geldof should be raising money to feed me  even went to a school reunion when I was 35 and still managed to fit into my actual school uniform, I could not even be bothered to grow a couple of inches  everyone said I looked great, it looked just like what we used to wear. Never had the heart to tell them it actually was what I wore in those days.

Ooh no I was not deliberately trolling, although I can see how that may have come across.
A kg of fat, weighs the same as a kg of muscle or feathers for that matter. As muscle is more dense than fat for the same weight it consumes less space. Also of note is that lean muscle requires calories to function so to a certain extent increasing your lean muscle also improves your body burn more calories.

Think I have that/hope I have that correct (otherwise my trainer will kill me)

All I was trying to convey to the OP is that weight loss is not certain for all. Personally though I think the mirror is a better indication of weight/shape/condition than scales

Blimey - it sounds like climbing should be your strength.

I look too skinny if I go below 77 kg! (Currently 88 kg and falling, down from 105 kg.)
