I've nearly used up a bottle of Finish Line and will be refilling it with chainsaw oil to give it a go. As Fab Foodie said, It's ''getting a lot of fans'' and it makes sense as it's used on a chain that works a lot harder than a bicycle chain.

I did try chainsaw oil. I bought a litre from the local agriculural merchants, and a nice oil can to apply it. I found it very stringy and difficult to get it to drop onto the chain which caused me to put too much on. I wiped off the excess as best I could but when I spun the pedals the oil flew off the cassette like sparks from a Catherine wheel, and even after repeated wiping it still happened. I gave up on it in the end as it caused too much mess on the wheel and frame, so if anyone has a good use for chainsaw oil perhaps they could let me know. I am now reverting to light engine oil which I have used for half a century without problem.

I found wax wore off too soon but I guess if you are more particular about regular cleaning itd be ideal, it keeps the chainset cleaner; I went back to using Finish Line Ceramic Wet Lube; its not as clean as wax but is cleaner than the green top stuff; it seems to offer a middle ground.

I trust that this doesn't equal helmets for "discussion".

After after stripping and spring cleaning my drive train this morning I am becoming interested in using wax chain lubes. However I am reading widely different opinions on the stuff. Some say it is wonderful and others that it is useless. Is there a middle ground? I like the idea of having a nice clean chain without having to keep spending hours cleaning off dirty gunge and oil.

Scott oiler anyone?

I had one on the motorbike. I never could get it just right. The chain was either flooded or dry. I am sure it was something to do with the weather! That experience put me off Scottoilers so I think I will give the bicycle version a miss.
