+1 for G Shock. I bought this Gulfman for about 50 quid in 2007, it's been on me through 2 tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, and it's been in the sea, lots and lots, they just work and they're immune to abuse. It needed a new battery 9 years in, that's all.
They still make the Gulfman although the price is more like 85 now I think. They're easy to use, and they have a nice green blue backlight for checking the time in the dark which I find really useful.

I used to have a Timex watch which cost me £8.99, it told me what time it was for years until one day I noticed that it wasn't on my wrist... haven't had one since but my phone has a clock on it so never replaced it.

The watch before the Timex one was a free one advertising Kelloggs cereal which lasted for years.

I have a safe with my expensive dress watches in that I have not worn for years. I switched to smart watches about 6 or 7 years ago and find them indispensable. Currently on a Garmin Vivoactive. I tend to keep them for about a year ad then sell them on because I get a very healthy discount on new ones, so don't actually lose any money.

FWIW I've not worn a watch for decades and don't miss it (especially such highlights as damaging it / myself / something else when it snags on stuff I'm working on).

I use my phone to tell the time, although do sometimes get stiffed if the battery runs out or I leave it at home. Plus I don't really operate in the "real world" so probably have less need to adhere to your man-made construct of time

I have considered a "nice but not showy" analogue watch a few times; but only from the perspective of it being something nice to own / wear rather than its primary functional capacity... which is probably the wrong reason and a good excuse not to sink any money into one.

Apple Watch for e, does lots of things including telling the time. Or phone.

I have a drawer full of watches, can't remember when I last wore one (certainly not this year). Probably a drawer full of watches with dead batteries now (I know the TAG needs a new one for sure)!

Still thinking. Four options:
1) Repair the existing. It still works. But how? Simply the case, where the pin for the strap locates, is now a slot rather than a hole, which goes all the way to the edge. So when you fit the strap it comes straight out.
2) Same again, trying to ignore the fact that the world has moved on since I last bought a watch.
3) Environmentally conscious and sustainable, analgue display only. E.g. bamboo, solar, etc. Don't need the functions any more with a mobile phone to hand.
4) Vivoactive. Gives me the only thing that my bike computer and mobile phone doesn't, i.e. heart monitor.
5) No watch. Sounds like a good number of us don't bother any more.

G-Shock - looks like a lot of money for a lot of plastic. Robust? Probably. Big? Certainly. Mondaine? Love the simplicity and the sustainability options look good. Tempted. Fenix 5X? I'll need to remortgage the house for that! (and also for Apple watch)
