Hopefully someone will know the answer to this.....i brought my bike mail order and the last 3 rides have seen the pedal arm come loose each time resulting in having to stop every 1/2 mile to tighten it,tried threadlock on the bolt and made no difference whatsoever, turns out to be the actual arm is'nt fitting the bracket properly.
I have upgraded the tyres, brakes, handlebar stem so really dont want to send it back,so my question is can my LBC fix the bike under warranty, they do sell the same bikes as mine or do i HAVE to send it back to the supplier.I really dont want to be without my bike for weeks on end,it took 5 weeks to get a replacement seat as it arrived torn.

They might be able to , wether they would want to or not is another matter. You bought the bike somewhere else and now want the LBS to put it right, what do you think their response would be?

I'll tell you exactly what their response would be... bring it in mate and i'll take a look for you, thats what he told me over the phone when i rang to see if they stock a nyloc bolt to replace the standard one that keeps winding undone,i'm certain he'll be more than happy to do the repair if allowed, after all he'll get paid for doing the job.

OK! One hurdle over! :-)

But unless the LBS is a dealer for that brand ( Viking?) I doubt if the importers will want to pay him.

Yes mate square taper.
There isn't just one square taper though ...

Wikipedia said:
Not all square taper crank and bottom bracket combinations are compatible. Although nearly all spindles use a 2 degree taper, there are two competing standards, defined by the measurement across the flat at the end of the spindle. The JIS size is used by Shimano and most other Asian manufacturers. The ISO size is primarily used by Campagnolo and other European manufacturers, in addition to cranks that adhere to the NJS standards (Sugino 75).

Ah, but, it should be JIS or ISO so I would say it's most likely matched up as it's new. PS You've got to crank the cranks on tight !!! Never had one come loose !

After the 1st time it happened,14 miles from home out in the sticks i wound it right up as tight as my 17stone would allow, plus the added protection of thread lock(or so i thought),still came loose, repeated the process again and guess what......yup still came loose,so loose that if i dont stop riding and tighten it then it would come completely off, according to my LBS on the phone i need a new arm as it has'nt been tapered correctly.

Take both cranks off and turn them through 90 degrees on the axle. That mostly does the trick.
Mr. Joe! Seer of Cranks! Maximum respect!

At the back of this is the continuing story of importers treating LBS's like dirt. I know one LBS that simply brings out the 'big meter', charges, and suggests you go to the importer for a refund.

Inform the company that you bought it from of the problem.

You can then give them three choices:
Replace the bike. Inform them that you will be removing all the parts that you have added since. I take it you kept what you took off.
Get them to send the replacements for the faulty/defective parts to you.
Get a local bikeshop, you trust, to do the repair. On this all costs incurred will be passed onto the supplier, by yourself.

They can then ask you to return for replacement, repair or refund.
They also have the right to examine the product & see if they can repair it or if its part of a larger problem. Before they do anything.

I contacted the supplier after the 2nd time and got him to check that using a nyloc bolt or threadlock would'nt invalidate the warranty and he confirmed it would'nt,he made a note of the problem and said to get in touch if it happens again, which it has,i just dont want to send the bike back and be without it for weeks on end, plus the cost of sending it back hence why i would much rather my LBS done the repair, above all else i trust em.

Hey,

Contact the company you purchased the bicycle from (Be polite) and ask them if you can get this persistant problem rectified (at their expence) at your local bike shop! They may agree to your request? Worth a try.
