Same here, which is why I sometimes end up jogging; worrisome as that's a gateway to the world of running, which I want no part of...

I walk loads in my work, but also for utility.
Sometimes I want to buy more stuff than fits in my panniers, so I'll walk the mile to Aldi's and back.
I have a bus stop at my doorstep, get free bus travel, but would never dream to take a bus for journeys less than 2 miles.
Sometimes I walk instead of cycling if the route is dangerous on a bike.
In good weather, I'll take a long leisure walk if I have the time, if not I'll cycle.

I make sure to walk as well as cycle every week. I also do body weight exercises. People often also get a shock if they walk up a hill when they have only walked on tame pavement or gravel tracks. Walking wirks a whole set of muscles, ligament and tendons that cycling doesn’t really touch. Plus good for skeleton, your back etc.

Cycling is a great aid to fitness, but pretty poor at helping maintain a healthy bone density, which is where exercise such as walking and running excel and get more important as we age.

What do people use to monitor their walks

I use Strava but only because I use it for cycling as well - it also allows my wife to see where I am which might be useful at some point !

but I know there are other available - just wondering what people use
I use Apple Watch for walks says I’ve averaged 3.5 mls a day the past 12 months (1300mls). There will be a lot of coincidental walking on top of that not measured.

With us moving to a farm we walk our dogs three times a day. I comfortably hit the mythical 10,000 steps on my Garmin watch, even though it suggests around 7k steps is ok for me

30,151,980 steps from Xmas 2014 for a total of 14,492.88 miles my Withings account tells me. Average of a little under 8,000 steps per day, I calculate. That's all steps, but dog walking is a goodly proportion.

Not sure it really means much tbh.

I am a regular cyclist, normally 10 to 12 hours a week, but until now I have not done a lot of walking. We have just taken on 2 rescue dogs. Yesterday was their first walk. We did a 2 kilometre walk and at the end my legs felt really heavy. I have read how important walking is for general fitness and endurance but did not realise how bad I was. Has anyone else experienced this?

Congratulations on adopting rescue dogs.

Congratulations on adopting rescue dogs.

Teh advantage of walking dog on leads is that you get to stop and start a lot due to "interesting" smells and "stuff"

really changes the number of muscle groups you end up using
(including upper body stuff if they are anything like mine was when she saw a potentially dangerous cat and decided to protect me from it!!)

If I'm not out cycling, hill walking, or kayaking I generally just walk to the next village and back. There's a car free road and a bike path that I can join up to make a four mile circuit. I often see squirrels and rabbits as well as the farm animals, makes the day so much nicer.

I think if you don't get your circulation going daily you run the risk of going stagnatant. That's when you start to get problems especially as you get older.
