I've seen apostrophes in BBC captions were there shouldn't have been. The job of writing them had obviously been given to somebody who wasn't fully literate. I wonder why?
That's terrible.

Incidentally it's "where" not "were".

What's the saying about casting the first stone?😜

Stuart Maconie, also a fan of the BBCs better points, has a few things to say about the BBC and class and its recruitment policies in this highly recomended (by me) book.

Seconded! He's a pretty good author, I have all his.

I don't write professionally. People who do shouldn't make mistakes like that either.
That's copy editors you're thinking of.

Professional footballers should never miss open goals.

Professional cyclists should never fall off their bikes.

Professional doctors should never mis-diagnose.

Sh*t happens.
People who are paid to write captions for TV programmes shouldn't make basic grammatical mistakes.

Once a Wheeler

…always a wheeler
…and that is only the beginning. The wrong flag may well have been a rush-the-graphic-to-screen error. Two ingrained errors which I find particularly annoying at the moment are:
  • The use of 'epicentre' to mean 'dead centre'. The epicentre is the epicentre precisely because it is NOT the centre. The absolute centre is the dead centre.
  • Quoting corona virus infections in different countries with no reference to the rate per 100,000. It is the number of cases per 100,000 of the population that count and can be compared. They seem to prefer numbers capable of causing a sensation to numbers which allow an accurate comparison.
…and there are many more.

Even the per 100,00 figures can't be compared.

For example, the UK government now counts care home and hospital deaths in the numbers, most of the rest of the world do not. Even when the Beeb trot out figures by way of a comparison they fail to provide the obvious caveat that there is no international standard for collating C19 deaths - which of course they conceal deliberately, because suddenly the UK wouldn't look so bad after all and it wouldn't be such a juicy slur upon Boris, AKA "The Antichrist" at the Beeb.

They have become the Daily Mail of leftist leaning media, and it is only the occasional mispronunciation, typo, or accidentally saying "Jeremy C***" that provides sane people any amusement.

I'm a northerner, less and fewerer are synonymous.

It seems less and fewer are becoming close to synonymous in common usage.

There is a continuing debate among grammarians as to what is now the 'correct' usage.

Further complicated by fewer not being considered correct for counting nouns which relate to speed, time, and distance.

"It's my birthday in fewer than two weeks" is generally regarded as incorrect, it should be "less than two weeks".

I agree with that one, using fewer in that context sounds incorrect to me.

The debate is unlikely ever to be settled, so I think the best plan is to use whichever word sounds right to you in the context in which you are using it.

It's also increasingly difficult to fairly brand any usage you come across as wrong.

They should not, but they do. They're human. It can be mildly annoying to pedants, including old farts like me, but it's really not that important.
I used to be a copy writer for several internet marketing companies and when i occasionally look back at some of my articles, they're littered with glaring errors... if only those who were supposed to proof read actually proof read
