I got fed up running so called race tyres, namely Ultremo's. Conti 4 seasons now, Slightly different ride don't roll or corner so well but no punctures apart from when i rode over some glass.:okay:

You need to move to somewhere less flinty. It will be cheaper in the long run ^_^

Seriously though, I've been running Vittoria Rubino Pro's on two bikes throughout the Spring & Summer and, fingers crossed, no issues so far (that's the kiss of death for my next ride).

Yep same here, rubino pros and rubino pro techs. No punctures. They're light and springy too.

I'm giving away both pairs because I'm like that.

The whole tyre thing is just more marketing. I CAN feel a difference with tyres although I couldn't begin to quantify it, I do know that some pass a lot of gyp to my arse and others, almost none. It isn't a straightforward case of wider tyres more comfort either.

But we get so easily led into spending £42.99 per tyre and this will never make us crit racers if we aren't.

By contrast 12.50 gets you a pair of Michelin that are light enough, fold up and I haven't had a puncture yet.

I have had tyres which cost more than £42.99, but never actually paid that for them. Shopping around always gets the same quality tyres for more like £25.

Have Conti GP 4000S on one bike and Specialized Turbo on the other. £50 a pair on both occasions. Definite difference compared to stock and a different feel between each other.

Disagree.
There are significant differences between different tyres (who ever pays the full £40+ for tyres is crazy btw) and they are readily felt. I've also run cheap Mitchelin's and theyare like riding on treacle compared to Pro-race. I tried Kyrilions because everybody rated them and they felt dead and horrible, Bonty Hardcases were light and fast but felt harsh and not overly grippy when wet, the Vittorias are fab in every respect apart from their susceptibility to local roads and PR4s are God's own tyre :-)

I run Rubino's or Lugano's (winter) on the commuter bikes.

The 'best' bikes get GP4000s.

I tried the Specialized S-Works tyres and I'm not impressed; back to GP4000s shortly.

Ok, fair point! :surrender: But Gp 4000s II are virtually the same and I've got some of those!

I ride both - I wouldn't say they're the same.

I put some really good tyres on my other halfs bike, she failed to notice any differance between the good and the cheap. So not everybody can feel the differance, to some people a tyre is a tyre.

I've run some 23mm Luganos through a couple of shitty winters and some very wet FNRttC and they have been exceptionally good, especially for the price.

I am defecting from Luganos as I don't find them very durable. They do about 500 miles before the rear looks badly worn. This is the 2 colour version, though - maybe the all-black one would be better ?

Got some Zaffiro Pro folding tyres in 25mm flavour to try next..

Those Vittorias are closely related to the Veloflex Open Corsas that my son, my cycling buddy and I are all using and none of us has any complaints. I'm using them with latex inners and they ride even nicer. They grip superbly, ride smoothly and the bike feels really "planted". They don't puncture any more than any other tyre and the wear is acceptable. A pair of these beauties is £52 from Ribble.

Rear tyre wear depends on how you tackle hills - round here we have some extremely steep but short little swines and the only way to get up is to attack them, meaning that you end up straining to put every ounce of power down and somtimes getting small spins from the rear wheel, especially if out of the saddle. This does a lot of damage to the tread.
