All my vinyl is at my parents as I haven't got the room, but one thing I love about going home is having a rifle thru it, cracking open a few cans and making a big pile of unsleeved records.

Never really got into the techie side of thing but always wanted to buy a decent turntable setup like it sounds you have. I have got an old 4-speed British-made Garrard I picked up in a bootsale I really like the sound on although (still like that first Billy Bragg LP the best!).

I like my vinyl and always on the lookout for some more Dylan or Johnny Cash LPs if I'm at a car boot sale.

What I miss most about vinyl is having a nice full sized sleeve with notes.

"Alpha 7SE won What Hi-Fi? Product of the Year award in 1999 and 2000"

That means nothing to me! I've heard far too many five-star products that just totally sucked for these awards to cut any ice. I remember a Phillips CD player that was supposed to be fantastic, I couldn't believe how poor it was. Even I'm not totally immune though.

I bought a pair of Wharfedale speakers, 105 I think they might have been, because they got great revues in the mags. High-end sound for £200, yada, yada, yada. I went into the Glasgow dealer I'd bought my other kit from and they said "they're crap, we don't stock them. We'll get you a pair if you want them but you won't like them".

So I went to Hi-Fi corner where they were happy to agree with What Hi-Fi and sell me a pair. Well I moved them about the room, set them up this way and that, farted around with them for a month and finally realised they were crap! Totally, utterly boring. Sold them, yes after one month, and bought a used pair of Linn Kans and I've never looked back.

A mate of mine had that Arcam CD player. Very dull. You know that. Why trust What Hi-Fi more than your own ears?

I've been planning to resurrect my turntable for a week, but haven't had time to get into the loft. I suspect I might need to buy a new stylus too. Where do you go for things like that nowadays? Doesn't need to be anything special.

No, not a girls in pvc thread... though not a bad idea in itself...

No. After an 8 year abscence, I finally retrieved my Thorens TD160B, SME2, Ortofon Combo from the loft and liberated my vinyl collection from the packing boxes they have resided in since we moved to Abingdon.

(For the audio buffs, the rest is Audiolab 8000A and Rogers Studio 1A's... a bit retro...)

Once buffed and set-up I lept straight for Billy Bragg's Levi Stubbs Tears

AWESOME!

Leapt out from the speakers, live, real, natural sounding music. God I've missed that sound. CD's on The Arcam Alpha jsut sound so dead and lifeless.

Sorry to say the following have been endured in a non-stop nostalgiafest...

Rikki Lee Jones
Early Style Council
Early EBTG
Alan Parsons
Julia Fordham
Foreigner
Third World
Grace Jones
Linton Kwezi Johnson
Saint Saens (Organ)
Gershwin RIB, AIP
Jazz at the Pawnshop
Suzanne Vega... now playing...

Mmmm, Billy Holiday, Lady Sings the Blues, Verve recording... it must soon be time!

Vinyl, I'd forgotten how bloody good it is.

Good for you! I have a Thorens TD126, SME 3S arm, Ortofon 530 Mk2 cart and Dynavector pre-amp running into a Cyrus 7 amp and Audiovector M1 speakers. I also have a £900 Cyrus CD player, but the vinyl set-up easily sounds better.

Funnily enough, I'm also feeling a bit pleased with myself, but at the opposite end of the tech-spectrum (I have never abandoned vinyl, tho' I must confess I play it now much less than I used to).

Going on holiday soon, and with the prospect of much driving, I decided to make some tapes. Someone on here very kindly put me on to Limewire recently, so to cut a long story short, I've spend a couple of very enjoyable evenings just sitting there thinking of all the old tracks I liked, and downloading them one after the other. (Black Betty, oh yeah....that reminds me of... Radar Love....now why does that make me think of The Devil Went Down to Georgia? etc etc.)

Then I got an ancient mp3 player off ebay, which proved to be a write-off, but mentioned it to my sis, who happened to have one lying around that she wasn't using...loaded all the mp3s onto that, got a £2 lead off ebay to connect it to my old NAD tape deck and set it to random, and now I've got 8 C-90s, all loaded up and ready to go.

Not a patch on vinyl, needless to say, but Chuck Berry doing Johnny Be Good still sounds just fine....

I have oodles of vinyl... plenty soul, jazz, reggae etc... not a hi-fi buff, just a chap with a turntable. Far too much to ever even think about recording it digitally or replacing, so I listen to it when I get the chance... very nice it sounds too.

All my vinyl is up in the loft, with deck, amps, speakers etc., not fantastic stuff, but okay, just takes up too much room in the lounge to use now, which is a shame as I do like the sound. I recently bought an Arcam Solo and Totem speakers, for a small system it is pretty impressive.

Fab Foodie, I'm impressed with some of your records.

If it's just a low-end moving magnet you need just buy one of these: LINK They're good carts for the money and the whole thing costs less than a new stylus! I've bought a couple of carts from Harrow Audio, no problems at all.

Buy a Rega Planer3. It's a total no brainer. Fantastic sounding deck that really brings music to life and just happens to be stunning to look at too. Also simple to set up and bomb proof, they ship with a lifetime guarantee. Unless you have a VERY revealing system it's the only record player you'll ever need. PS, don't get a P3, it's a different deck and not as good. Don't get a Planer 2 either. Looks almost identical but it's too thin sounding.

I saw Chuck Berry last summer! The old boy's lost the plot a bit, but I could not care less - it was fantastic to see an 81 year old still strutting his stuff.

Thanks for the info, Mr P.

Yup, I've had two Thorens decks off ebay, both for less than £100. A modest outlay on a cartridge and a service will have it sounding far better than all but the very best CD players.
