A Linn isn't vintage - or if it is then you will get best quality by updating it which will mean its not vintage anymore (says the man who has spent WAY too much updating his hifi recently)

It depends if you want to listen or look at it, an old turntable is lilkely to need significant amounts spent to make it usable/safe (my opinion of course)

I don't know if it counts as vintage, but I picked up a Thorens TD160 (with SME tonearm) with a NAD 3140 amp off a bloke in work for buttons and it sounds bloody lovely..

The speed switch on the turntable has the most beautiful 'click'...

Snap! Mine's a MkIV with SME IIIs tonearm and ortofon cart. I had it fixed up by a local engineer and it sounds fab. For some reason, it's at it's best sat on wood rather than glass (or maybe I'm imagining it).

My old fella bought a Pink Triangle turntable, a very sensitive bit of kit and rather pricey. Technics SL1200 was more my thing back in the day.^_^

Get a valve amplifier. They glow in the dark and make a pretty good job of heating the room. I bid for this one on Ebay and had to drive from London to North Wales to pick it up. Well worth the trip.

I've got a Pink Triangle too ( A PT Export for those interested), good looking turntables with a good reputation for sound quality but I never found it easy to set up and use and it is now in its box. I've also got a Linn Sondek which is, at the moment, not working. In the CC archive there is a thread where this was discussed with MrPig (anyone remember him?), IIRC it was the consensus that the problem would be power supply unit was broken. I still haven't got round to getting it fixed but I have promised myself that it will be my christmas present to myself. I've also thought about getting the old PT out and setting that up again as well.

Get a cheap second hand quality system and hook up a modern headphone amp and a pair of Grado's.

Then stop there - you know it makes sense.

Sound even better with some really expensive cables.

Not really vintage, but a few years old and I bought it second hand from a dealer, nice though - my boy's wrecked the needle though by dragging the arm across the slab...bless. It's an American turntable fashioned on a slab of concrete, weighs a ton.

You can have our old Bush music centre.... it cost £79.99 in 1984. It has a CD cup holder, twin cassette player [so you can record from one to the other] and a 33/45 deck with one of those insert things for playing singles from juke boxes... and speakers with proper removeable fabric covers...even throw in the 13amp plug.... and a spare copy of A Kick Inside LP... [bit warped].

I've gone completely MP3/Spotify
But I have an old turntable my bro gave me, and squillions of singles/albums on vinyl, which only rarely get an outing these days.

I fancy a valve amp. There's an Icon Audio Stero 25 on ebay at the moment, and its in Gloucester too.

I have thought about the valve amp kits you can buy but I know knob all about electronics and although I have done the odd bit of soldering at work over the years, it has really been just the odd bit.. Has anyone here ever built one up from a kit?
