since going to the shops is a pain in the snow. Plus local shops are less able to re-stock because deliveries become more difficult.

Definitely agree with this.

Our village shop has had a run on milk because loads of people can't get 7 miles into town to work and the delivery lorries can't get up the hill!

maybe she works for an old peoples home and had to get enough food to feed a number of elderly residents just because people spend a lot of money doesn't mean its all for them

True, when I worked at Iceland, we had two ladies used to come in and shop every week for a care home. Two trolleysworth every Thursday, at a couple of hundred quid a time.

Mid you, there's some families get through a fair amount, shocking to me with my little loaf of bread, one pint of milk and and onion.

If our shop was open before 9 and after 5, I'd gladly support it...but as it's not and I work full time, they don't see me very often.

This is something I've noticed every time I've been in England. Local shops close very early. I'm used to small shops which open at about 7.30am and close at 10 or 11pm. It would drive me mad. Surely they must lose trade.

The local shops here are open 8am-8pm and the other is 7am-11pm but I don't use them all the time as they are a lot more expensive than asda or tesco. Its a simple case of going somewhere with more choice and cheaper prices. We do use the local shops every now and again but its easier to get everything we want from the large chain stores.

But if you do not use it a bit to give it some support it will not be there when you do want it.

I buy a few bits in the local shop even though it costs a bit more. You have to count in fuel cost to go further to the supermarket.

It stands to reason that the small shop has not got the economy of scale to match the big shops prices but it save travel time and is a great asset for a community. Worth going there if you can.
Think if all the set price things (magazines papers etc) that the supermarket is then ripping you off on as they are not charging less than the little shop.

Use it or lose it I suppose.

BBC tv have been showing a series - Turn Back Time- the High street, for the past few weeks.

Based in Shepton Mallet's almost deserted high street (due to an out of town retail park) it has tried to revitalise it.
Started as victorian, then Edwardian , 30's ,40's . This week was the 60's and the innovation of Self service and the abolition of the Retail price management.
The local General Store went bust and those who were exhalting the virtues of local shops and their service in previous weeks were the ones who made the cheaper is better option and then bemoaned the closing of the General Store.

I do use them but as said not all the time. Also I have a big asda within walking distance to work so tends to be easier to get bits from there and takes no fuel at all.

It's a shame the local shops are disappearing, ours did too - mind you that's because I torched it. Rip-off bastard.

Our local Co-op closed down a couple of months ago. Last night I had a dream that it had re-opened and was better than ever, and I'm sure it's down to reading this post. One of the things it sold in my dream was sparkly ham displayed in big pyramids. Why sparkly, and why ham? I'm a vegetarian!
