In the 1990s there was a Taiwanese professional tennis player called Wang Shi-ting. Since Wang is the surname, she often appeared on the world scene as Shi-ting Wang. More recently she became captain of the Taiwanese Fed Cup team. I have heard that Western colleagues call her Stephanie.

Would Mr Smallbone be from the Erdington area? Many years ago I had a girlfriend whose surname was Smallbone, I'm sure her brother was a teacher and lived in Birmingham.

When I was growing up there was a chiropodist in the neighbouring town with the surname of Bunnion!

I went to college with a guy called Steve Davis who was ever worse at snooker than I am.
