Hi

The only reason I set a budget of £100 orriginally was because my mate has just got a carrera vanquish for just under this figure second hand. I have found I think he was just very lucky, as you sometimes drop on a real bargain, I bought dropped on a simmilar bargain a year or two back. Not involved with cycling, but I bought a stanley 51, 52 shoothing board wood plane for £50, which I later sold for well over £500 at auction.

Anyway, there was the reason, but lets get back to this thread, now I have realised I will need to spend more money.

Cheers

Dave

Scook94, please reread my post, I have said I set the £100 budget in another thread, but now want to spend more.

Buzzy, don't take it personally. It wasn't meant that way. One of the joys of a forum like this is spending other peoples money. £100 doesn't give us much to play with, I spent that much on my new saddle!

We debated this a while ago and I reckon the best all round bike is a touring bike. Be prepared to spend a few bob for a new one or get a second hand bargain. The only faster bikes are racers and they cope quite happily with woodland tracks etc. plus they are designed to take panniers and so are good for shopping trips. You'll break your 100 quid budget though.

Hi

I have found that £100 was a little optimistic, unless you are very lucky on finding a bargain. So this is the reason for this thread, I have upped my budget, and want recomendations of people.

I was hoping people would say what bike they would recomend, if you were aproached by a newcomer to the road cycling world, ie me, on the side of the road, and asked this very question.

I am not expecting sarcastic answers, and any that feel they have to answer in this way can post elsewhere please. Sorry to be harsh, but I am asking a serious question, so please be polite and serious in reply.

GBB, thanks for you helpful reply.

Gerry Atterick, if you have something to say please do just that?

Downward, is that your bike?

Cheers and look forward to some more helpful replies!

Dave

Yes it was my 1st bike so it's the ultimate beginners bike.

For £500 though - I have the Kona Dew Deluxe, Quickish onroad and able to tackle a bit of off road (not keen on mud and wet grass with skinny slickish tyres though)

Yep £500 is no problem, what do you recomend in that catagory? What is your oppinion?

I would say that for £500 you should be looking at something with alloy frame carbon forks a good entry level groupset (Sora / Xenon maybe higher) preferably a triple front chainset and also a whole groupset not no-name hubs rims brakes front chainset etc. Any number of suppliers can do you a bike at that price it all comes down to the spec.

Best one I've seen at that price is the Merida 901; saw one on Sunday a really nice bike very light would have bought it if I didn't already have 3

You could go for a Vitus Razor from Chain reaction for £200 less but by the time you upgrade it you might as well have spent the extra in the first place.

The advice which I always give in these situations is to go to a Local Bike Shop (LBS) or preferably more, and try as many bike as you can. When you find a bike that is right for you, you will know it as soon as you ride it. If the shop won't let you ride the bikes outside, walk away and never go back.

I suspect that that is not the advice that you are looking for, but everybody is different, the bike that is idea for me may not be right for you, hence I can't suggest any particular bike. However, I am sure there are others more willing to name their favorite bikes at your price point, it would make things easier for them if you were to say a wee bit about the sort of riding you intend doing...
