rliu...what makes you think your chain is the correct length?

Actually, looking at it a bit more closely, it looks like you've routed it round the bottom wheel, then the top.

The chain was cut by a bike shop two months ago and was fine for around 6-700 miles

Apologies - from the 2nd pic it does look like the chain is correctly routed - I'm more familiar with SRAM where the top jockey wheel sits lower in relation to the body of the mech. However, there is definitely something wrong with the way the derailleur is sitting if that is the same chain as before.
