Must have been something in the pies he ate.

I'd always had him down as a doper, but a fine rider nonetheless.

I still hold both views.

Few from that era (who enjoyed some success) were not tainted, but I still remember the racing with a fond nostalgia.

my sentiments too, the endemic doping at the top end of the sport levelled the playing field back out again, just at an artifical plateau, he was still a better rider than most of his chemically or blood enhanced peers.

Bullshit. Utter bullshit.

Firstly, not everyone was taking EPO, and certainly not in the same quantities, same combinations with other banned substances, or with the same levels of medical organisation and control. Secondly, EPO benefits certain kinds of riders more than others (just think about what EPO actually does, in medical terms, and you'll see what I mean). Thirdly, this the most complacent, dangerous attitude possible in terms of the health of riders, especially young riders trying to break into the sport. Who knows how many potentially great careers were wrecked because of all this? How many lives were shortened (again, think about what EPO does to blood)?
