Anyhow, I do very much like Oban 14 year old, which is their standard offering - I guess 50 quid or so these days and will certainly replace it when finished, which isn't far off sadly,

I've not yet started exploring independent bottlings, Scottish malt whisky society and such, but my "permanent" collection (ie those which'll be replaced when empty include the following

Oban 14 (as mentioned)
Lagavulin 16 (hopefully when there's a deal as full price is now £70 - luckily I stocked up)
Ardbeg 10 and Wee beastie (5 year old)
Coal Isla 10
Laphroig 10 - often on a deal and well priced regardless
Glenlivet French Oak 15. (see - I don't only drink Islay Island, and west coast whiskies !)
Edradower 10
Glenfarclas 105 (no age statement, cask strength) - their 16 year old I found a bit lacking, though perfectly smooth and drinkable
Talisker 10- another top notch smokey dram at sensible money
Knockando and Pultney are two more very nice drops of whisky at a very reasonable price

Penderyn Madeira cask
Penderyn Sherry cask - both no age statement but very nice and often on a deal - got a Madeira one for £28 last week.

Have to say this quietly as ,I do a lot of work for the whisky industry, but I really hate the stiff. Even the smell of it makes me heave. How anyone can actually drink it is beyond me.

Agree about Oban - always absolutely rammed whenever I've been there and just seems to be trying too hard for the tourist dollar. Better than Fort William though.

Stratford upon Avon. Tourists everywhere. Queues everywhere. The whole town is dedicated to Shakespeare, but it is difficult to get to see anything.

Independent bottlings well worth exploring. I’ve just finished a Caol Ila 13 from Gordon & McPhail and have their Ledaig 10 on the shelf. Bought them from a lovely place in Shrewsbury, Wrekin Whiskies.

Just about to open a Laphroaig 10 Sherry Oak

Not so much a surprise as it’s somewhere that I know reasonably well, but Bournemouth town centre is pretty bleak these days.

When Bolletta was preschool I used to take her for days out to Bournemouth during the summer. The council used to put on free entertainment for kids in the lower gardens, then we’d go up to Beales (now closed) for some lunch. Now and again I still ride there through the New Forest.

I think Bournemouth first took a kicking from the 2008 financial crisis as a lot of banks, insurers and other financial service companies used to have offices in the area. Not the big money stuff but lots of customer service type jobs I think. Since then it’s just continued the slide. While the council keeps the central gardens nicely and it still seems to attract visitors, the shopping areas around the parks have been decimated.

Bournemouth has always had many victims of homelessness but there seem to be a lot more people sleeping rough now. If you park up at the Richmond Gardens car park and walk down Dalkeith Lane you’ll see tents, clothes bundles, lots of rubbish and the odd syringe.

The coastal drag from Christchurch to Poole has some sections of extreme wealth, which I think makes the contrast with the centre more evident.

There was no-one offering boat-trips around the lighthouse, despite it being a coastal town

I'd like to see a boat trip around the lighthouse, it's about half a mile inland!
Might be controversial to some, but I'd put a vote in for Kendal. Love the Lake District, especially Keswick, but I thought Kendal was a bit grotty.

Would agree, Kendal is grotty, but, then again, so are most towns/cities in UK in my experience, may I start with:

South Shields
Sunderland
Chatham
Slough
Reading
Bracknell
Basingstoke
Ashington
Blyth
Maidenhead
... etc

For me the issue with a lot of places which are routinely visited is that they're trading off past glories of having one or two 'unique' things about them.

This is fine, but means that to their detriment they haven't really diversified enough.

Mercifully there's f*ck all in North Shields, so nobody bothers coming here and it's generally quite a decent little town. Though the high street and shopping centre are a bit grim.
