Is there nothing the UCI won't do to their rulebook to aid a certain Mr (I'm the most tested athlete ever) Armstrong?
After allowing him to start the TDU to which he was ineligible. They now allow him to race The Tour of Gila after lobbying by the USCA.
This constant "interpretation" of rules when it relates to the man who appears to be bigger than the sport he indulges in, will, IMO eventually blow-up in the faces of all concerned. The rules are there to be followed by everyone, even if you don't agree or it is inconvenient. The UCI and the big tour bosses are doing everything they can to make sure they create a spectacle at this year's Giro and Tour and to hell with the other riders!

He effectively 'failed' a dope check. Walking away for 30 mins to take a shower could have allowed him time to adjust his subsequent dope check to ensure it was clear. To claim it was a mistake just does not wash, he knows the rules (probably better than most). This leaves the rather obvious conclusion that the 30 min delay was to allow him to sort out his blood/urine.

Pro Tour Riders and Pro Continental are not allowed in National level races. UCI have waived the rule to allow armstrong Leipheimer and Horner to take part provivded that they wear non sponsored kit so they are wearing mellow jonny kit instead would have thought that was classed as sponsored kit but hey ho when the rules are changed for you to enter you can do what you want.

More details here 2nd story down.

As Mondo says, it's a rule saying that Astana weren't allowed to field a team in the Tour of Gila, as originally planned.

One thing I'm not sure of is whether the rule applies to Pro Tour teams, or riders. If it's riders, then riding as "Team Mellow Jonny" isn't breaking the rule as such.

I'm not overly keen on the UCI's inconsistency at most times, but given the state racing is in in the US (lots of events cancelled due to sponsors pulling out &c) I have slightly less of a problem with this instance of it. Hopefully the presence of some "names" in the peloton here will pull in the crowds and both ensure that this race has a future, and that other races can run next year.

I would be mellow John if someone was constantly smoothing my path to the detriment of others.

Jeez man - arms and legs do get added to stories don't they. started off that King Lance the Great (No sarcasm there) had a 10 minute shower, then he had a 20 minute shower - now it's become a 30 Minute shower. He is one CLEAN athlete if you ask me.

Thats a long time in the shower.

To be honest if having him in the race gives cycling a wider and bigger audience im not sure what the problem is, is that not good for everyone that comes on this forum?

from a newbiee point of view as in getting onto cycling myself and following the sport every week and reading up on riders I was a fan of lance due to what he got over and achived. In some of your eyes that may be wrong.

Im not for him but I have learnt that in the cycle community he is more hated than loved and to be honest im not sure why, is it all down to doing drugs and never getting caught, or for being the best and people getting jelious. A fine line between love and hate and im not sure that i want to ask why most in the cycle commuity dont like him because i am sure this is an ongoing debate.

I'm not sure that they don't. Don't mistake volume for consensus

Taking out the fact that once again the UCI have rolled over for the 'Teflon Texan' what about the smaller Teams in this race?

How do they feel about the rules being changed at the last minute to let some big guns in? Less exposure for them and their sponsors as the media circus pitches up to follow Teflon and his boys. It also becomes a much harder race to take a stage in nevermind the GC.

"Lance got to the climb and put the hurt on everyone so all I had to do was make one big attack and I was gone," Leipheimer said. OOh so tough Levi, oh thats right your racing a couple of levels down.
