Whatever else you say about Sky they have put more money into cycling in the last few years than anyone else.
How much coverage did it used to get by anyone else.

Personally I see the BBC as bandwagon jumpers - totally disinterested until someone else has made the investment and done all the hard work

Are you kidding? Eurosport have much, much more coverage of cycling than Sky and have been doing so for years.
Apart from the TdU I can't think of any other races Sky cover.

It makes perfect sense for Sky to leave cycling to Eurosport and the BBC as it's free advertising for them every time their team gets mentioned.

I've never knowingly given money to Murdoch and I'm not starting now. If the UCI want to spread the popularity of cycling they'll choose someone else. But, as the teams are getting half the cash, I expect they will want to hand it to the highest bidder.

I know Eurosport broadcast cycling, but do you honestly think the increase in interest in cycling is from that, and that the sponsorship and consequent advertising from Sky has had no effect?
