If crisp packets and fivers are good enough then the chances of my buying a Park tyre boot are less than zero. I was thinking of cutting up a tyre but if a toothpaste tube will do then that's going to be my solution, unless I trip over a bit of underslating felt.

Another vote for the bit of toothpaste tube. I've been carrying one around in my saddlebag for about four years, and only yesterday got my Gator Skins slashed by a jaggedy hinge on the road. The piece of tube worked so well that I am slightly tempted to leave it there for a while and carry on riding...

Leave it in there claud, that way we can do a 'what toothpaste brand' is best for a tyre boot.
My personal fave is Aquafresh

You do realise of course that the day you stop packing a tyre boot will be the day you puncture on 'Britian's Cleanest Rural Road'

Of course, and having MTBed and commuted for 15 years without needing one (or indeed knowing of their existence) I will need 2 the next time I nip out to the shops. I won't have a pump.

Sainsbury's basic range for MTB tyres, Sensodyne for the lighter, more supple tyre

I rode the Aquafresh repair in to work this morning. Still going strong and no loss of pressure. I've ordered a new tyre but I might not bother fitting it for a while...
