Two points:

1. I only have spds in my recumbent trike, and more for safety than power (to avoid feet coming off pedals and getting 'sucked' under the trike). I have toe clips otherwise and they do me fine. On the other hand, I'm a pootler, not a speed freak.

2. It is pedals and pedalling. Peddling is selling stuff...

if you're doing almost no walking on your rides, go for look or spd-sl. these transmit the power from your legs better than spd and shoes made for them tend to have stiffer soles.

if you're likely to be off the bike lots (touring etc) then the more walkable-in spds are your best bet, although you'll sacrifice a bit of efficiency.

i've never understood why people will wear spds to ride 50 miles on account of the few meters you have to walk at the café stop.

And don't forget, for several of the systems you cna get cleat covers - which are invaluable when walking off the bike in cleated shoes. Extends the life of the cleat and helps stop the wearing slipping about the place, or clogging up the cleats with mud... dirt..

How much real world difference does going from spd to spd-l really make? On my new bike I've had some spd pedals fitted as that is what I had on my hybrid. It is really worth having two pairs of shoes, for my two bikes (I'd rather save the money!);)

Ha, ha. Clever. The irony being that the OP is unlikely to get it.

Certainly, if we were to pounce on every typo on the internet we'd have a job on our hands that would stretch into eternity, but I don't think it's necessarily pedantic (or rude, if it's done politely -- as in this case) to point out common mispellings ... especially if they are words germane to the topic. Surely we should know how to spell the parts of a bicycle on a bicycling forum. Hopefully, the OP has now learned something new without any great embarrassment. Hey, we can all learn something every day, if we pay attention and not take offence when someone offers knowledge.

While I have my pedant's mortar board on, let's encourage capitals, paragraphs and punctuation as well. The conventions of composition were developed to make it easy to read.

Or is that just old hat in the latter days of texting and decaying educational standards?

Speedplay pedals are expensive but worth it.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
If a pedlar on a pedal bicycle pedalling around peddling his wares also sells drugs is he not both a pedlar and a peddler, as well as a pedaller?
