just had a quick look at the bike (many thanks by the way CarlIP) there is no head badge but the rear hub has a serial number K788730. does this mean its from 1930?

IIRC Hercules head badges of that era were transfers rather than metal, so hopefully it should still be there under the paint. You should be able to date the bike from the hub - a bit of googling should help with that.

Hub was produced for one year, in 1935 only.
1936 saw it being superseded by a different model.
